Game Story

MEMPHIS, Tennessee (Ticker) -- Pau Gasol scored 24 points as the Memphis Grizzlies posted their seventh consecutive victory over the Los Angeles Clippers, recording an easy 96-76 triumph. Memphis improved to 21-17 against the Clippers - the only team in the league against whom the Grizzlies own a winning all-time record. "The last couple of years we've got a lot of wins against them," said Gasol, who finished 9-of-13 from the floor and added eight rebounds for Memphis. "They've got some really good players, but I guess it's a good matchup for us." Gasol helped Memphis take control of the game in the first quarter, scoring eight points in a 17-4 run over the final 5:40 of the period. The Grizzlies led 29-12 after 12 minutes. "This is a low point for us right now," Clippers forward Elton Brand said. "Our defense isn't playing well and we're giving up easy looks. ... We just need to get it together." The 12 points were a season-low for Los Angeles in any quarter this season, snapping their previous low of 14 in the fourth quarter against the Grizzlies on December 19. The Clippers went on an 11-0 spurt to cut the deficit to 51-43 early in the third quarter, but Memphis responded by scoring the next eight points and rolled thereafter. "I thought overall, from beginning to end, we had pretty consistent play tonight," Grizzlies coach Mike Fratello said. "Obviously with their team you have to be concerned with Elton, Corey (Maggette), and (Bobby) Simmons and with all due respect, they did play last night and they had to travel, so we caught them in a situation where we were able to try and take advantage and it worked out that way." "You don't have to say much more about the way we played tonight," Clippers coach Mike Dunleavy said. "Just look at the stat sheet. We were 4-of-22 and we got nine turnovers from our top two players (Brand and Maggette). Anybody that does that is going to have a real tough time winning a ballgame." Bonzi Wells came off the bench to score 18 points for Memphis, which had only two players reach double figures despite having nine players play at least 22 minutes. After starting the season 11-7 - their best start since the 1992-93 season - the Clippers have lost seven of their last eight games. Maggette scored 14 points - on 3-of-15 shooting - for Los Angeles which shot a season-low 36 percent (26-of-72) from the field. Brand added eight points on 1-of-7 shooting. "We've got to decide what we're going to do," Maggette said. "Are we going to (throw) it away? Or are we going to try?"
