Game StoryLOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Apparently, coach Gregg Popovich's message did not hit the San Antonio Spurs until the third quarter. Tim Duncan scored 14 of his 23 points in the second half and Tony Parker added 21 overall as the Spurs recorded their fifth straight win, a 98-79 triumph over the Los Angeles Clippers. Disappointed by his team's slow start and frustrated with some calls by the officials, Popovich drew consecutive technical fouls and was ejected with 58 seconds remaining in the first quarter. Popovich left the building and was unavailable for comment after the game. Trailing, 22-14, after the opening period, San Antonio clawed back to forge a 39-39 tie at halftime behind seven points by Duncan. But it was the third quarter that the Spurs put their offense into another gear, outscoring the Clippers, 17-4, over the first five-plus minutes. "We came out in the second half and really took the confidence out of them knowing that they played well in the first half," Duncan said. "We were able to fight back and get it tied up, making sure that they weren't able to jump at us at any point and gain any confidence." Bruce Bowen hit a jumper in the opening moments of the second half and Duncan - who played 36 minutes - followed with back-to-back driving dunks to spark the run. "I'm fighting through a cold," Duncan said in answer to a question regarding his playing fewer minutes in recent games. "I'm more tired than anything else. I know in the long run, the rest I've been getting will help my legs a lot. It's great the way Coach Popovich is splitting up my minutes. It will add up in the long run." Coming off a 114-80 win at Portland on Thursday, Duncan shot 11-of-18 from the field and pulled down eight rebounds. Parker handed out 11 assists and Brent Barry scored 12 points - including a pair of 3-pointers - for San Antonio, which ended the calendar year with its best start in franchise history at 25-6. "We're used to playing with each other," Parker said. "It's been three or four years now that I have played with the team. Now we know what to do. We know how Coach Popovich wants us to play defense and we know how to play Spurs basketball." Corey Maggette and Rick Brunson scored 17 points apiece for Los Angeles, which has lost eight of its last 10 games. "We played the right way in the first half," Maggette said. "But in the second half, we didn't do what we were supposed to do. They have a good team, but we just didn't execute the way we did in the first half or play the right game." Maggette helped spur the Clippers' strong start, scoring 10 points in the first half. Brunson, who will be counted on to lead the team for an extended period after Marko Jaric's foot injury was diagnosed as a stress fracture, shot 7-of-13 from the field with eight assists and six rebounds. "A game is not won in the first quarter or the first half," Brunson said. "You can't expect that they aren't going to catch up, especially against a team like that. They have great shooters and play their roles strong, so we have to play the right way together for 48 minutes." So far, the point guard has filled in admirably, averaging 10.8 points and 6.8 assists in the five games since Jaric suffered the injury. "Just ask me (on) January 10. Nothing is guaranteed," Brunson said regarding his starting role. "I just try to come out and play aggressive. They played last night, so I tried to pick up the tempo at both ends of the floor. Parker came back strong in the second half and I just have to take my hat off to him." Duncan responded to Popovich's ejection by emphasizing it probably came from something that happened prior to Friday's game. "It's not what happened on that one play," Duncan said. "Probably, it was about the one that happened five or six games ago on a similar play. If it happens, it happens. We fought through it. I thought Peter (assistant coach P.J. Carlesimo} did an excellent job with him out. He filled in just fine and did great."
