Game Story

HOUSTON (Ticker) -- The Houston Rockets were looking to avenge their worst loss of the season. With Yao Ming sidelined, Tracy McGrady took it upon himself to do just that. McGrady had 42 points, 10 rebounds and five assists to lead the Rockets to a 105-90 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks. On Tuesday, Milwaukee led by 12 points after the first quarter and by as many as 31 while rolling to a 115-87 home victory over Houston. "That was pretty embarrassing, to ourselves and the city (of Houston)," said McGrady, who played 47 minutes in this one. "I didn't want to come at all. I had a lot of rest after shootaround today with a nine o'clock game." Even with Yao suffering from the flu, the Rockets returned the favor in this one. "I like any challenge," McGrady said of playing without Yao. "It's just a matter of getting the job done, imposing my will on the game. I came out right away in an attack mode." McGrady scored 17 points in the first quarter and 23 in the first half for Houston, which shot 49 percent (19-of-39) from the floor while taking a 51-44 lead at the break. "Tracy put a stamp of greatness on the game from the beginning," Houston coach Jeff Van Gundy said. "He was assertive, aggressive and set the tone for the game with great energy, force and efficiency." "Tracy got it going early and started making shots over our guys," Milwaukee coach Terry Porter said. "He got a lot of foul calls and that made a big difference." Playing in only his second game with the Rockets, David Wesley helped contain Bucks shooting guard Michael Redd, who scored 21 points but made only 9-for-22 from the field. "Redd's been really rolling," Van Gundy said. "(Wesley) defended him as well as you possibly can defend him." "I'm just out there fighting," said Wesley, who at 6-1 gave up five inches to Redd. "I was crowding him as much as I can, making it tough for him, fouling him when I can. We felt we owed them something from the loss in Milwaukee." Wesley continued to struggle on the offensive end, making only 3-of-11 shots and scoring nine points. "Had I not been playing defense, I probably would have been sitting on the bench," Wesley said. Dikembe Mutombo had six points, eight rebounds and two blocks while starting in place of Yao, whose streak of consecutive starts ended at 193. It was the eighth-longest active streak in the league. Redd helped the Bucks battle back in the second half, reducing their deficit to 60-59 with a 3-pointer at the 5:48 mark of the third quarter. But that was as close as Milwaukee would get. Juwan Howard answered with a jumper from the elbow 13 seconds later to spark a 10-0 Houston run over the next two minutes. McGrady scored the final eight points of the spurt, hitting a jumper from the top of the key to give the Rockets a 70-59 lead with 3:13 to go. McGrady made 13-of-24 shots, including 3-of-6 from behind the arc, and 13-of-16 from the foul line. Maurice Taylor was 8-of-11 from the floor for 16 points - 12 in the fourth quarter - and Jon Barry added 11 - including three 3-pointers - for the Rockets, who shot 51 percent (39-of-76) while limiting the Bucks to just 39 percent (32-of-82). Taylor considered this a revenge game after the 28-point loss at Milwaukee. "We were coming off the big trade with Jimmy," Taylor said of the deal that sent Jimmy Jackson to New Orleans for Wesley. "It shook a lot of people. It was good to play (the Bucks) again when it's still fresh in your mind." Desmond Mason, who scored 24 points Tuesday, was limited to just 15 on 4-of-12 shooting for Milwaukee.
