Game Story

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- Ben Wallace said it best: When you get the ball to Rasheed Wallace, good things happen. Rasheed Wallace scored 23 points and grabbed 12 rebounds and the Detroit Pistons dominated the middle two quarters in a 100-88 victory over the Boston Celtics. "It was the same thing, just tonight I hit a couple shots, that's all it was," Rasheed Wallace said. "The last four games or whatever, I've been struggling from the field, but just hit those same shots that I've been taking." Wallace posted his sixth double-double of the season for Detroit, which had six scorers in double figures. Tayshaun Prince added 18 points for the Pistons, who won for just the second time in their last five home games. "I think we had good spacing, good ball movement, everybody was unselfish, found an open man," Ben Wallace said. "We were able to get some good looks and get ourselves off to a good start." Detroit held a 30-24 lead after the first quarter and put the game out of reach over the next 24 minutes, outscoring Boston, 55-37. The Celtics pulled within 97-88 with 3:24 to play but got no closer. "The only way to beat the Pistons to defend them, and we didn't do that," Boston coach Doc Rivers said. "They got too many easy baskets, and we helped that with bad shots and turnovers. We gimmicked it up with a small lineup and got back into the game, but you aren't going to win many games by doing things like that." The Celtics gave up 100 points for the 11th straight game. "We let the Pistons score 100 points, and they almost never do that," Boston All-Star swingman Paul Pierce said. "I don't know what it is going to take, but we have to find a way to play better defense as a team. We need to trust each other." Rookie Tony Allen scored a season-high 18 points in just 21 minutes off the bench for Boston. Jiri Welsch scored 14 points but Pierce was held to 13 on 4-of-11 from the field. "He (Allen) was out there having fun, trying to pump his team up," Detroit guard Chauncey Billups said. "He did a good job. He was in there getting energy buckets. Tonight just wasn't the night to beat us." Richard Hamilton and Antonio McDyess each scored 13 points for Detroit while Billups had 12 and Ronald Dupree 11. The Pistons improved to 5-1 vs. the Atlantic Division. Ben Wallace had five blocks, giving him 1,001 for his career. He is just the second Piston to record 1,000 blocks and is 69 behind Terry Tyler for the team record. "I had no idea I was chasing 1,000 blocks," Ben Wallace said. "I was just out there trying to get a win. To get it at home where the fans can appreciate it, they've shown me a lot of love and support since I've been here, being able to get it at home and let the fans celebrate it with me, that means a whole lot." Boston guard Gary Payton played just 20 minutes after pulling his left hamstring. He is listed as day-to-day. "I think I did about five minutes into the game," Payton said. "I kept trying to stretch it out, but it didn't help. When it got a knot in it, I got scared, because that's never happened before. I just knew I didn't want to snap it."
