Game Story

OAKLAND, California (Ticker) -- Allen Iverson and the Philadelphia 76ers wore down the Golden State Warriors, who were shorthanded to begin with. Iverson scored 29 points and Kenny Thomas and rookie Andre Iguodala added 19 apiece as the 76ers used an efficient offensive approach to post a 112-104 triumph over the Golden State Warriors. Iverson carried the team early, scoring 21 of his points in the opening half and Thomas and Iguodala hit big free throws late. "I really expect people to think the ball is going to be in my hands at the end of the game and it is, but if they do anything to get it out of my hands, guys have got to step up and make plays and I've got all the confidence in the world that guys can do that," Iverson said. Philadelphia shot 50 percent (40-of-80) from the field, including 6-of-14 from 3-point range. The 76ers sealed the win from the line, making all but five of their 31 attempts, including 13-of-14 over the final 12 minutes. "We had a sense of urgency from the beginning of the game," Iverson said. "We got down then we got back into it. We got a lead, had time. The second half we pretty much played steady throughout the half and then when it was time to make plays on both ends of the court, we did." Philadelphia evened its record at 14-14 by winning for just the third time in eight road games against the Western Conference. The 76ers are 4-2 on their eight-game road trip, their longest stretch away from home since the 1994-95 season. "I think we played a solid game of basketball," Philadelphia coach Jim O'Brien said. "We did not keep the ball in front of us well. Other than that, it's good to get our fourth win on this trek of ours." "We're taking it upon ourselves to let people know we can beat teams in the Western conference," Thomas said. Troy Murphy led Golden State (11-20) with 29 points and 14 rebounds. Former Sixer Speedy Claxton added 21 for the Warriors, who were without star guard Jason Richardson, swingman Mickael Pietrus and newly acquired Zarko Cabarkapa. With forward-center Dale Davis not getting off the bench, Golden State had just eight players in its rotation. "We have to step up, and hope to get those guys back soon and do the best we can," Murphy said. "As a team you search for how to replace that," said Warriors guard Derek Fisher, who scored 15 points off the bench. "We've done the best job that we can do for the most part but we can figure out ways, even with Jason out of the lineup." Iverson showed no pity for the Warriors. "I don't have anything to do with that," Iverson said. "That has nothing to do with when the ball's thrown up. We're missing guys. We've got guys on the injured list that could be on the court. We could make those excuses." The Warriors shot well, making 51 percent (38-of-74) of their attempts, including 11-of-25 3-pointers. After the game, Golden State released forward Ansu Sesay, who had four points in 11 minutes against the Sixers.
