Game Story

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- Larry Hughes and the Washington Wizards continue to turn the tables on the New Jersey Nets. Hughes matched a season high with 33 points and the Wizards set a franchise mark for 3-pointers in a game as they rolled to a 112-88 victory over the Nets. Washington had lost 13 of its last 16 meetings with New Jersey entering the season, but has won all three matchups since. In this one, the Wizards closed with a 26-6 run and scored the final 18 points to turn the game into a rout. "You help yourself out when you help your teammates out," said Hughes, who finished with seven assists and five steals while scoring more than 30 points for the fifth time this season. "I am always aggressive but at the same time I am definitely looking for my teammates and trying not to turn the ball over." "It was one of our most impressive wins of the season," Washington coach Eddie Jordan said. "This is more impressive because we are playing against a terrific point guard (Jason Kidd) and Richard Jefferson and Vince Carter are terrific players, too." Washington's bench outscored New Jersey's 31-12. The Wizards' 14 3-pointers broke the previous mark of 12 set last season against Dallas. After Vince Carter's layup cut Washington's lead to 86-82, Hughes kicked off the closing surge with a pair of 3-pointers, part of the Wizards' 14-of-27 effort from the arc. "When we do it, we have to do it at our pace," Washington forward Antawn Jamison said after he and six teammates made at least one 3-pointer. "If it's in the flow of the offense and the guys are open, take the three. But don't come down and just try to respond to what the opponent is doing. "Tonight we were able to do that. We came down and took our time. Certain guys were feeling it and they were able to knock down shots." Hughes ended up with 11 straight points in the fourth, including the first three of the 18-0 burst. "Impressive, man," Jamison said of Hughes' performance. "The guy never ceases to amaze me. He's on a roll right now and we've got to ride him off - continue to go at him until we milk all we can out of him. He's playing phenomenal. It's great to see him doing the things he's doing and he's really making not only my job easy but a lot of these guys' job easy also." Jarvis Hayes sank Washington's last 3-pointer to make it 106-88 with just over two minutes left. Carter had his finest game since joining the Nets last month, scoring a season-high 31 on 15-of-23 shooting. He looked like his former high-flying self on a pair of alley-oop dunks in the third quarter. "I'm rejuvenated," Carter said. "I get a chance to start over kind of like I'm a rookie again. Life is good and I'm excited about my opportunity. I'm just going to try to keep Jason Kidd happy so he'll stay." Carter is averaging 26.0 points and 6.2 rebounds in five games since New Jersey acquired him December 17. The Nets, however, missed their last seven shots and failed to score over the final 5:37. "C'mon man, I don't give a damn how fun we are to watch, we need to win," forward Richard Jefferson said. "I'm not out here to please the fans, I'm out here to get wins and tonight wasn't the night. "We should be meshing right now. We were tired after halftime and it was a close game after three (quarters). We just didn't defend anybody. That's not meshing. That's just standing up and taking it."
