Game Story

BOSTON (Ticker) -- It took one day for Richard Hamilton to find his range. Hamilton made two big jumpers down the stretch as the Detroit Pistons held on for a 110-104 victory over the Boston Celtics. In Thursday's disappointing 101-79 home loss to Memphis, Hamilton was unable to find the basket as he missed all 10 of his shots. One night later, Hamilton made 10-of-18 shots from the field and scored 25 points while doing his best work in the waning moments. "We had more of a rhythm tonight on both ends of the floor and we really helped each other out," Hamilton said. "We shared the ball great tonight and we weren't standing still and got easy baskets." The Celtics trailed by 10 points with 6:29 remaining before rookie Al Jefferson scored five points during an 11-2 run that sliced the deficit to 97-96. Rasheed Wallace and Chancey Billups followed with back-to-back jumpers, pushing the Pistons lead to five. After Ricky Davis' basket pulled the Celtics within 101-98, Hamilton buried a 3-pointer with 1:38 remaining, then hit a running jumper 30 seconds later. He added two free throws with 43 seconds to play. "Richard's three was great and Tayshaun made a great pass," Piston coach Larry Brown said. "It was a good win. We needed that. We were disappointed (Thursday) night the way we played (in a home loss to Memphis)." Billups finished with 22 points, Rasheed Wallace had 16 and Ben Wallace grabbed 10 rebounds for Detroit, which won for the sixth time in eight games. Paul Pierce netted 22 points and Davis 19 for the Celtics, who lost despite shooting 59 percent (39-of-66). "We were in the game the whole night," Pierce said. "That's gonna be the story of the season - how well we're gonna play, how much we're going to improve, and how much we're going to test each other." Oe night after shooting 31 percent, the Pistons shot 49 percent (38-of-77) and made 8-of-13 attempts from the arc. Known for its tenacity on the boards, Detroit held a 40-29 rebounding advantage, including a 16-6 edge on the offensive glass. "It's a killer when you play defense for 24 seconds and then give them the ball back and give them a shot," Celtics coach Doc Rivers said. "I thought that has to kill your spirit at some point and I think it did tonight." Gary Payton added 17 points and five assists for Boston, which had a five-game home winning streak snapped.
