Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- It has been feast or famine for Tracy McGrady when facing the Dallas Mavericks this season. This time, the superstar swingman of the Houston Rockets chewed them up. McGrady had 30 points and 11 assists and Juwan Howard scored a season-high 29 points as the Rockets posted an impressive 124-114 victory over the Mavericks. The tandem of McGrady and Howard helped snap Dallas' five-game winning streak and gave Houston its first win in three tries against its intrastate rivals. McGrady scored 48 points in an overtime loss at Dallas on December 2, then slumped to 15 when the Mavericks routed the Rockets nine days later. He was electric in this one, making 6-of-8 3-pointers and scoring 23 points after halftime. "I was in one of those zones," McGrady said. "I felt like every time I came off the pick-and-roll and saw any daylight, I was going to knock the shot down. I play well in this building." The two-time defending scoring champion, McGrady had 13 points and eight assists in the third quarter, when Houston turned a four-point deficit into a 94-85 advantage. His jumper with 5:53 left gave the Rockets the lead for good, 74-72. McGrady scored five points and Howard four during an 11-2 run that gave Houston its largest lead, 112-97, midway through the final period. "You have to give credit to our guys for moving the basketball around, getting open shots, just taking what the defense gave us," Howard said. "We tried to be patient on the offensive end and sure enough, we got some good looks and made some open shots." The Rockets entered the game as the third-ranked defense in the NBA, while the Mavericks were the second-best offensive unit. In this one, Houston beat Dallas at its own game with a host of major contributions. Howard made 14-of-19 shots, David Wesley scored 12 of his 21 points in the third quarter and Yao Ming chipped in 20. "Juwan Howard was unbelievable tonight," McGrady said. "I just felt like getting him the ball every trip down the court, no matter what spot he was in. He was feeling it tonight." "Offensively, we didn't have any rhythm," Mavericks guard Michael Finley said. "Defensively, we didn't have any rhythm and they just exploited us on both ends." Wesley enjoyed his finest outing since joining the club via trade December 27. "It was kind of fun," he said. "We really spread the floor, they were doubling, running at Yao and Tracy. It's all about the rest of us finding our spots. I should have hit more than four (3-pointers)." The Rockets shot 61 percent (47-of-77) to post their best scoring output this season and the most against the Mavericks. "We were trying to play good basketball, get everyone involved and look for good shots," Houston coach Jeff Van Gundy said. "We're a little quicker now. When you make 60 percent of your shots, you're going to do well. Both teams played well and it was definitely a high-scoring game, what the NBA likes." "We can't let a team come in and score 120 points on our home court," Dallas forward Dirk Nowitzki said. "It's a little embarrassing, but it happened and we've got to move on." Nowitzki scored 28 points and Jerry Stackhouse added 26 for the Mavericks, who went 4-1 on a 16-day homestand. The two combined for 25 first-half points to help Dallas take a 61-57 lead into the break. Mavericks forward Josh Howard sat with flu-like symptoms. "We missed Josh," Finley said. "We needed that guy who would be able to slash through their zone defenses and make them pay on the offensive boards. We didn't really have that from anyone tonight."
