Game Story

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- Hoping to extend a winning streak against the defending champions is a tall task to ask of any team, especially the lowly New Orleans Hornets. Chauncey Billups scored 25 points and Richard Hamilton added 20 and a season-high 10 assists as the Detroit Pistons cruised to a 90-76 victory over the Hornets, who had their season-high two-game winning streak snapped. Following Friday's loss at Memphis, New Orleans owned the worst record in the league at 2-29. But the Hornets doubled their win total with triumphs over Sacramento and New York and looked to string together their first three-game run since February 2004 with a victory in this one. "We felt good coming into this one," said Hornets center P.J. Brown, who had 13 points and seven rebounds. "We finally finished against a couple of good teams - Sacramento at home and New York on the road. Detroit is a good team, but I thought we could have made a better game of it." While never ahead in the game, New Orleans hung tough in the first quarter and pulled even at 25-25 on Bostjan Nachbar's 3-pointer at the beginning of the second period. But the Pistons immediately showed their dominance, going on a 17-4 run to build a 42-29 lead. "We're just really starting to understand what we have to do," Hamilton said. "Teams come out all fired up at the start because we're the champs. We have to match their aggressiveness early in the game." Billups scored 10 of his 12 points in the quarter during the burst. "I was rolling, Rip was rolling," Billups said. "It was just a great team effort. We're at our best when everybody is playing well, when we have six or seven guys in double figures." The Pistons only had five players in double digits in this one, but it was enough to get past the Hornets, who had three reach the 10-point mark. The Hornets drew within 62-55 with 5:22 remaining in the third period before the Pistons used a 10-4 spurt to close the quarter and gain a 72-59 advantage. "We traded baskets at the start of the third quarter," Brown said. "We couldn't get a stop. I thought that was the difference in this one." New Orleans coach Byron Scott pointed to Detroit's 19-5 advantage in fast break points. "A lot of people do not consider (the Pistons) a fast-break team, but they get up and down the floor extremely well," Scott said. "That was probably the biggest difference in the game. I thought we did a pretty good job defensively, but we gave up too many easy buckets and too many points in the paint." Tayshaun Prince scored 12 points and Ben Wallace had 11, a season-high 19 rebounds and four blocks for Detroit, which matched its longest winning streak at three games. "Ben started the charge with his blocks and rebounds, and we just all fed off him," Billups said. "I see signs of us getting better," said Pistons coach Larry Brown, whose team has won eight of its last 10 games. "This is a tough stretch for us, physically. We gave away so many home games early this year. We can't afford to give away games we're supposed to win." Lee Nailon scored 16 points and Baron Davis added 16, eight rebounds and six assists for the Hornets, who had won five of their previous seven meetings with the Pistons.
