Game StoryHOUSTON (Ticker) -- A night after the Houston Rockets scored a season-high 124 points, they needed a career performance from Bob Sura to overcome the New Jersey Nets. Sura scored a career-high 35 points, including a key 3-pointer in overtime, as Houston posted a 94-85 triumph over New Jersey. With Houston clinging to an 87-85 lead in overtime, Sura hit a 3-pointer with 1:02 to play, putting away the game. Sura scored five points in the extra session and Juwan Howard added eight of his 12 overall. Sura's previous high was 32 points against Orlando while with Atlanta on April 2, 2004. His best outing as a Rocket was 24. Sura hit 11-of-16 shots from the floor, including 6-of-7 from the arc, and was 7-of-8 from the free-throw line. "He shot the heck out of the ball," Houston coach Jeff Van Gundy said. "Even if he misses, I admire his heart, his competitive spirit, his will. You can't have enough guys like that." Houston needed Sura's big effort as Yao Ming and Tracy McGrady had off nights. Yao tied a season low with six points and McGrady added 18 but shot just 6-of-18. "Tracy was hurting a little, Yao was struggling, I got going early, made my first three and got on a roll," Sura said. "The last 10 or 12 games, I've been playing pretty well." "He was the wild card," New Jersey guard Jason Kidd said. "That's why it's a team sport. Sura picked it up for Yao and Tracy and made some really big shots." Playing with a sore thigh, McGrady left the court near the end of the third quarter but returned to play 10 minutes in the fourth and the entire overtime. "I went up for a jumper (in the third), came down and there was pain on my left side," McGrady said. "Sometimes you've got to suck it up for your team. I was pretty much a decoy. I really didn't do anything. I just wanted to be solid on the defensive end. "Right now, I don't think an MRI is necessary. I'll come in (Friday) and get some treatment." The Rockets shot a season-high 61 percent in Wednesday's win over Dallas. In this one, they got off to a slow start, making only one of their first eight shots and falling behind, 17-3, with 6:02 to go in the first quarter. New Jersey led, 19-12, after the first period, with Houston scoring a season low for a quarter. "Our starters clearly got off to a horrid, horrid start," Van Gundy said. "But they bounced back." The Rockets never led until David Wesley converted a steal by Sura into a fast break basket with 5:24 left in the third. It was part of a 10-0 run in which Sura scored the other eight points, giving Houston a 59-53 edge. Vince Carter scored 17 points for New Jersey and Jason Kidd nearly added a triple-double with 16 points, 10 boards and nine assists. The duo shot a combined 13-of-39 while the Nets were 33-of-85 (39 percent) as a team. "He's off the charts," Nets coach Lawrence Frank said of Kidd. "He's just amazing. He wills his way around and he is one of a kind." The Rockets won their third in a row, while New Jersey lost for the fifth time in the last six games. "I feel horrible for our guys," Frank said. "They gave a tremendous effort."
