Game Story

DENVER (Ticker) -- With Kevin Garnett not at 100 percent and his team in desperate need of a win, Latrell Sprewell stepped up his game. Sprewell scored 13 of his season-high 29 points in the fourth quarter as the underachieving Minnesota Timberwolves ended a seven-game road losing streak with a physical 93-83 triumph over the Denver Nuggets. The Timberwolves had lost three in a row and seven of eight, falling to .500 after posting the best record in the Western Conference last season. Last season's MVP, Garnett was hampered with a right knee injury that kept him out of the first half of the fourth quarter. The Wolves seemingly were sparked by the altercation between Minnesota's Michael Olowokandi and Denver's Nene. With 7.1 seconds left in the third quarter, Olowokandi and Nene exchanged blows after Olowokandi took umbrage to a head-butt from the Brazilian forward. The two had been separated a few possessions earlier but could not be prevented from getting at each other a second time. The biggest hit might have been an incidental punch Nene landed on veteran official Bennett Salvatore. "I tried to tell the officials about it earlier," said Olowokandi, who along with Nene is certainly looking at a suspension. "When the refs don't control the physicality, things like that happen." While Denver interim coach Michael Cooper thought the fight lit a fire under Minnesota, Nuggets forward Kenyon Martin took it at face value. "This was a tough game to lose," said Cooper, who fell to 2-6 since taking over the team December 28. "I thought we lost our composure after the fight went down, but they kept theirs." "Tempers flare," Martin said. "Two guys just went at it. I don't think it changed the game, they just started making shots." Troy Hudson scored the first seven points of the fourth quarter before Sprewell hit a 3-pointer to build a 79-67 advantage with 7:44 left. "That was a playoff type of atmosphere out there," Hudson said. "The fight definitely intensified the game and we just took it on our shoulders to keep it that way." "The bottom line, tonight was just a good team effort," Sprewell said. "Everybody did something to help us win. I just knew I had to be aggressive tonight." The Nuggets cut the deficit to 80-77 on a steal and layup by Andre Miller with 4:18 remaining, but Hudson drilled a 3-pointer followed by two more from the arc by Sprewell to put away the game. Hudson, a reserve guard who had been benched by coach Flip Saunders in favor of Anthony Carter, scored 10 of his 18 points in the final period. "Bringing Troy in and giving him an opportunity to be with some of the main guys helped a lot," Saunders said. "I think Sprewell knew he had to step up his aggressiveness." Garnett finished with 15 points, taking only 10 shots, while grabbing 10 rebounds. He played the part of decoy in the final period - dishing out three of his seven assists. Martin scored 23 points for Denver, which has dropped 14 of its last 17 contests. Carmelo Anthony added 13 on 5-of-18 shooting for the Nuggets, who play seven of their next eight games on the road.
