Game Story

SACRAMENTO, California (Ticker) -- On a night when the Sacramento Kings celebrated their past, Chris Webber provided a vintage performance. Webber scored a season-high 36 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as the Kings held on for a 99-95 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers. The 1985-86 Kings squad, the organization's first in Sacramento after a move from Kansas City, was honored at halftime. Webber had 18 points at that point and scored 10 more in the third quarter when the Kings took a 77-69 lead. In his second game back since resting a sore left knee, Webber shot 16-of-25 and dished out six assists. A five-time NBA All-Star, Webber has rested his surgically repaired knee three times this season and come back strong on each occasion. In two games since his most recent one-game layoff, he has averaged 29.5 points, 12.5 rebounds and 5.0 assists while shooting 24-of-40. "The more minutes that I can get, the better I will play," he said. Sacramento, which wore blue satin replica uniforms from that first season, was playing with a full unit for the first time in a while. Guard Mike Bibby returned from a one-game layoff for a sprained ankle and guard Cuttino Mobley made his debut with the team after Monday's trade. Mobley was given a loud welcome when introduced to a raucous ARCO Arena crowd. "The ovation I got was great," he said. "When you have a town like this behind you it's easy to play." "I definitely wanted to get Cuttino involved," Webber said. "He and I were sitting on the bench talking about how good our (starting) five is and how he is going to bring scoring to us, how I want my assists to go up and how I want his scoring to go up." After a slow start, Mobley gave his club a significant spark in the second half. His first 3-pointer as a King put Sacramento ahead, 69-67, with 2:26 left in the third quarter. With the Kings nursing a 91-87 lead, Mobley made a steal and raced the length of the court for a layup and six-point edge with 1:39 to go. He matched a career high with four blocks. "With me in the lineup, it's going to be a problem for a lot of teams," Mobley said. "From one to five, I don't know who's better than us. "I'm going to have fun (in Sacramento) basketball-wise. The camaraderie, the chemistry, the way they move the ball around. There is not yelling at each other and when a mistake is made. We just get back on defense and we have fun." Peja Stojakovic scored 22 points, including four free throws in the final eight seconds, to seal the Kings' 13th straight home win vs. the Clippers. Los Angeles, which had defeated Seattle and Miami in the past three days, dominated the boards, 49-31, but could not pull off another upset. Elton Brand scored 25 points and Chris Kaman added a season-high 23 for the Clippers. Corey Maggette, who hit a dramatic game-winner to beat Miami on Friday, was held to 14 on 4-of-13 shooting. "We outscored them in the paint and had a big rebounding difference and we still lost," Kaman said. "It's frustrating." Brand, Kaman and Maggette helped Los Angeles outscore Sacramento in the paint, 54-34, but had four turnovers apiece.
