Game Story

OAKLAND, California (Ticker) -- With Kobe Bryant sidelined, Lamar Odom took leadership of the Los Angeles Lakers. Odom scored the team's final five points, including a tie-breaking driving layup with 1.3 seconds remaining, as the Lakers rallied for a 104-102 triumph over the Golden State Warriors, who have lost nine straight games. With the game tied at 102-102, Odom received the inbounds pass beyond the arc, drove the lane and lifted a lefthanded layup past the outstretched arms of Clifford Robinson. "I didn't think I shot that well tonight," Odom said. "I tried to drag (Robinson) over to the right side as much as I can. Everybody shifted over to their right and I was just looking and the whole left side of the court opened up. I tried to speed dribble to the basket and get a layup." "We've lost nine in a row now so there's no good feeling coming out of this," added Warriors forward Mike Dunleavy who had 21 points. "It's a tough loss, an unfortunate loss. We've just got to come back Monday night and get a win." After scoring just three points in the first half, Odom, in his first year with the Lakers, finished with a season-high 27 and grabbed 12 rebounds. Odom also drew a charge against center Adonal Foyle to set up the go-ahead possession. "I tried to get him going right but he made a quick move to his left and was able to get to his left," Robinson said of the winning shot. "It was a tough shot. The last thing on my mind when I'm playing defense is thinking about getting help. I look to try to get the job done myself, so we have to help and he made a good play. You have to give him credit." Golden State's Speedy Claxton had a chance to win the game, but his 3-pointer bounced off the back of the rim at the buzzer. "We made defensive plays toward the end of the game, to stay in the game," Odom said. "I had to just stay agressive. I looked down as Adonal Foyle was coming and tried to tell myself to step up a little bit." "It looked good but it's tough to put yourself in that situation with a second left and expect to get a win," Robinson added. In the starting lineup due to Bryant's sprained ankle, Chucky Atkins added 20 points for Los Angeles, including a 3-pointer that provided a 97-96 lead with 2:40 left, its first since the start of the third quarter. "It was big," Odom said of Atkins. "He's got a lot of guts and he didn't even think twice about taking a shot. It was definitely a big-time shot." Chris Mihm and Caron Butler scored 16 apiece for the Lakers, who have won four of their last five games. Mihm also hauled in 12 rebounds. Derek Fisher scored a career-high 29 points against his former team but could not prevent Golden State from blowing a nine-point fourth-quarter advantage. "Losses like this hurt really bad no matter who they're against," Fisher said. "It makes it tough to keep the chin up but you have to. This is the tough part where you figuring out a way here or there and turn nine losses into nine wins and the effort is there, sometimes not in the right areas." Warriors forward Troy Murphy, who is third in the NBA averaging 11.4 rebounds, grabbed a season-high 19.
