Game Story

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Ticker) -- Michael Redd's finish was nothing like his start. Redd scored 21 of his 27 points in the second half as the Milwaukee Bucks posted a 99-92 victory over the Charlotte Bobcats, who are looking very much like an expansion team. Starting to play like the All-Star he was last season, Redd missed eight of his first nine shots before coming alive in the second half. "I just try to play team basketball and let the game come to me," Redd said. "I don't have to force a lot of shots and be the leading scorer every night. I just wanted to be more aggressive in the second half and assert my self." "He just stepped up in the second half," Milwaukee coach Terry Porter said. "He was able to get some good looks and able to drive to the basket and get some opportunities." Redd helped set the tone early in the fourth quarter, scoring five points and capping a 7-2 run with a shot from the arc with 9:55 left to give Milwaukee a 77-72 lead. The sharpshooter also made a big jumper with 1:38 remaining to open a six-point lead. It was the fourth straight big game for Redd, who is averaging 24.2 points during that span. "He's been doing that all season long and he can really get it going for us," Bucks forward Joe Smith said. "We run into these (teams) that have go to guys like (Michael) Redd," Charlotte coach Bernie Bickerstaff said. "That's who they get the ball to, and we're still searching for that guy to get the ball to in that situation - someone who can make a play." Desmond Mason added 16 points and Dan Gadzuric 13 and 10 rebounds for Milwaukee, which shot 40 percent (35-of-87) and made 25-of-36 free throws in stopping a four-game losing streak. "We've been desperate for a win," Redd said, "To win one on the road is huge. This is going to be good for us, not only statistically, but psychologically as well." "When we've played well defensively, everything else clicks," Bucks guard Mike James said. "We don't ever have a problem scoring. That has not been our problem this year; our problem has been allowing teams to shoot well in the second half, and today we were able to defend well." Rookie Emeka Okafor, Gerald Wallace and Brevin Knight all recorded double-doubles for the Bobcats, who have lost five straight and 11 of 12. Okafor had 15 points and 11 rebounds and Wallace 13 and 10 while Knight added 10 and 10 assists. Even with some solid individual performances, Bickerstaff still wasn't pleased with his team's effort. "There were spurts," Bickerstaff said. "But in terms of pure basketball, like you like to see, it wasn't there. I know why we're not playing, in terms of execution, we just haven't gotten it done in a practice session. Unforced errors hurt down the stretch. I think there might have been three or four cases that we didn't get a chance at the basket." The Bobcats shot just 36 percent (32-of-89) in their latest loss. In its inaugural season, Charlotte (8-26) has swept Houston and owns wins over defending NBA champion Detroit and Minnesota, which reached the Western Conference finals in 2004. But the Bobcats have won just once since Christmas. "(Losing today) was very frustrating," Wallace said. "We know that we're going to be there every time at the end, but what we don't know is how we're going to finish in the end. That's what frustrating. It's something we have to build on as a team."
