Game Story

MEMPHIS, Tennessee (Ticker) -- Stromile Swift came off the bench to give the Memphis Grizzlies an early spark that lasted the rest of the game. Swift's thunderous two-handed dunk over Yao Ming in the first quarter lit a fire under the Grizzlies, who rode their reserves to a 99-80 victory over the Houston Rockets for their third straight win. Memphis (21-18) won for the ninth time in 10 games and climbed into thirdplace in the Southwest Division ahead of Houston (20-18), which had a four-game winning streak snapped. Swift led six Grizzlies in double figures with 18 points, but none were more meaningful than his dunk midway through the first quarter. Coming on for starting center Lorenzen Wright, the 6-10 Swift rose over the extended right arm of the 7-6 Yao and hammered it home. "He came out and went straight at Yao, went over the top of him and dunked on him like he did (to) Dirk Nowitzki," Wright said. "It was exactly the same way." "When I get the ball that deep in the post, I try to go up on anybody," Swift said. "I know he's long and big, so I was just trying to go up and dunk it hard. Every time I get a chance to dunk, I try." The basket cut the deficit to 14-10 and brought a roar from the announced sellout crowd at FedEx Forum. Swift scored eight points in the period, which ended in a 25-25 tie. "That lit a fire in them right there," Rockets forward Tracy McGrady said. "(Swift) came off the bench and made an outstanding play. From there, those guys were energized and they took off. It seemed like the momentum stayed with them throughout the whole game." The rest of the reserves followed Swift's lead, combining for 17 points in the second quarter. They began the period with an 8-0 burst that turned into a 54-47 halftime lead. "Their guys coming off the bench gave them great minutes," McGrady said. "They contributed defensively and offensively, and did a great job of playing their roles. That was the difference in the game tonight. They had energy and we didn't." Memphis' starters opened the second half with a 10-0 spurt, pushing the advantage to 64-47. The Grizzlies held a 73-60 lead entering the final period, when the bench returned and again asserted itself. Earl Watson set up a dunk by Swift, made a steal and dunk, then found Swift with an alley-oop pass for an 80-60 lead with 10:25 to play. Swift drew Yao's sixth foul less than four minutes later. Swift made 6-of-9 shots, grabbed six rebounds and blocked a shot as his quickness gave fits to the bigger Yao, who was in foul trouble all game. He picked up his third foul in the first half and fifth midway through the third period before fouling out with eight points and five boards. "It was key getting Yao into foul trouble early," Swift said. "He and Dikembe (Mutombo) are long and big in the lane and have great ability at blocking shots. So we wanted to drive the lane and take the ball to the basket so that we could get them in foul trouble." Memphis' bench outscored Houston's, 44-18, including 27-5 in the first half. "We got a big lift from our bench tonight," Grizzlies coach Mike Fratello said. "Stromile had a big, big game, which was key at the time." Jason Williams scored 16 points and Pau Gasol added 14 and nine rebounds for Memphis, which shot 51 percent (34-of-67) as it improved to 15-7 under new coach Mike Fratello. McGrady scored 28 points for the Rockets, who fell to 2-1 vs. the Grizzlies this season. "They did a good job defending us from getting quality shots," said Rockets coach Jeff Van Gundy, whose team shot 13-of-42 in the second half following a 15-of-30 effort before the break. "You have to give them credit defensively."
