Game Story

ORLANDO, Florida (Ticker) -- Despite Steve Francis' initial reservations, the Orlando Magic may have found him a winning partner in Doug Christie. Francis scored 32 points and Christie made a series of big plays down the stretch as the Magic rallied to post a 103-101 victory over the Detroit Pistons. Francis publicly complained when Orlando shipped his friend and backcourt mate Cuttino Mobley along with Michael Bradley to the Sacramento Kings on January 10 in exchange for Christie. Although Francis still gets emotional when Mobley's name comes up, he and his teammates are well aware of Christie's contributions. "He's a basketball player, and it doesn't make any difference what situation he's in, he can adjust," said Francis, who matched a season high with 12 rebounds. "Tonight was just a stepping stone to show you what kind of player and person he is." "Coming in, I didn't know what to expect," Christie said. "I was a little nervous playing the world champs first of all, then playing at home and not knowing the plays was difficult. But I just go out and play hard, and that's the bottom line." Playing in his second game with the Magic since the deal, Christie teamed with Francis to key Orlando's 20-9 run to close the game. The surge helped the Magic avenge a 101-94 loss at Detroit last Friday and match last season's win total of 21. It was Orlando's sixth win in eight games, and gives them an 8-1 record in games of five points or less. With the Pistons ahead, 92-83, midway through the fourth quarter, Christie started the burst with a hook shot and then made a quick steal to set up a Francis layup. Hedo Turkoglu provided back-to-back baskets, and Francis later found Christie for a 3-pointer that put the Magic ahead to stay, 98-96, with 1:26 left. "I was looking to drive and (Christie's) man came in," said Francis, who notched his 8,000th career point in the first quarter. "I've always said that if a guy's open I'm going to hit him. And Doug was wide open." "As big a shot as that was, it was much more fun watching him defend," Magic forward Pat Garrity said. "He took (Detroit guard) Richard Hamilton out of the game for the last six minutes. Seeing him defend on your team is a lot different than seeing him twice a year. He's living up to his billing." Christie scored nine points and made four of Orlando's nine steals, and Turkoglu finished with a season-high 29 points in his fourth start since the trade. The Magic are 3-1 with Turkoglu in the starting lineup. He was 3-of-3 from the arc, leading a 7-of-9 effort that was capped by Christie's go-ahead shot. Hamilton led six players in double figures with 26 points for Detroit, which had a season-high six-game winning streak snapped. "When Christie plays defense like tonight, he doesn't have to worry about anything else," Hamilton said. "He just tried to deny me the ball. It's like one of those old-school defenses when you are in high school and where you just put a guy in just to guard you. He was following me all the way out of bounds. That's what they brought him here for." The Pistons had not lost on the road since December 11 at Memphis, a span of six games.
