Game Story

NEW ORLEANS (Ticker) -- Jermaine O'Neal's last mistake was one not even Jamaal Tinsley could fix. O'Neal tipped a missed free throw into his own basket with 3.7 seconds left, sticking the Indiana Pacers with a 90-87 loss to the New Orleans Hornets. O'Neal had 24 points and 11 rebounds but had a disastrous stretch run, missing three free throws and an open jumper before his accidental clinching basket. Tinsley tried to bail out the Pacers with 18 of his 28 points in the fourth quarter, but it wasn't enough against the league's worst team. "I don't know what to tell you guys," said O'Neal, who combined with Tinsley to score all of Indiana's 26 fourth-quarter points. "It's a bad loss for us. If we want to get back on course, we have to play a certain way. It doesn't matter what (the Hornets') record is. We can't play that way if we hope to get to the point we need to be at." The game was tied, 87-87, when a driving Dan Dickau drew a foul from Tinsley with 5.2 seconds to go. Dickau made the first free throw but missed the second, and O'Neal - trying to fend off Rodney Rogers and gain control of the rebound - tipped it in. "I tipped it," O'Neal said. "I tipped it in, yeah." The basket was credited to Rogers, giving the Hornets a 90-87 lead. Indiana's Reggie Miller fired an airball on a 3-pointer from the right corner, and New Orleans (6-32) escaped with its fourth victory in seven games and third straight at home. The Hornets led by as many as 10 points in the fourth quarter and still held an 83-77 lead at the 3:20 mark after a jumper by Lee Nailon, who scored 30 points. O'Neal missed two free throws but was rescued by Tinsley, who had a difficult driving layup and 3-pointer to make it 83-82 with 53 seconds left. P.J. Brown sank two from the line before O'Neal followed in his own miss and drew a foul with 30 seconds to play. But O'Neal missed the free throw which would have tied the score, and Brown made two at the other end before Tinsley again covered for O'Neal with another 3-pointer that tied it with 25 seconds remaining. "I never expect to miss them, especially in clutch situations, but I did," said O'Neal, who made his first four free throws. "You have to put that on my back. Put the burden on my back. Hopefully, I'll make them when I get in that opportunity again." Tinsley continued his stellar season, scoring 28 for the second straight night. He's averaging 21 points on 50 percent shooting in the last seven games and 16.9 for the season, nearly double his average his first three seasons. "Jamaal got it going down the stretch and made some great things happen, which gave us an opportunity to hang in," Pacers coach Rick Carlisle said. "He's become a real dynamic player at his position this season, and he's obviously very important to us." "I'm just trying to do whatever I can to win," said Tinsley, who added nine assists and eight rebounds. "We fell short, knowing we had another back-to-back and we didn't come through." It was the sixth time in seven back-to-back situations since November that the Pacers (19-18) failed to sweep. They won at Houston on Tuesday. Dickau scored 17 points and Rogers added 12 for the Hornets, who played their second straight game and 21st this season without injured All-Star guard Baron Davis (bruised right ankle). Miller scored 10 points and Jeff Foster grabbed 15 rebounds for the Pacers, who fell to 7-6 since O'Neal returned from his 15-game suspension. "We were lucky to get out of here with a win," New Orleans coach Byron Scott admitted.
