Game Story

SAN ANTONIO (Ticker) -- With towering superstar Tim Duncan 
having a quiet game, Tony Parker came up huge.

Parker scored 15 of his 25 points in the third quarter before
his only basket of the final period was the difference as the
San Antonio Spurs withstood a late rally for an 80-79 triumph
over the Los Angeles Clippers.

After scoring nine points in the opening 12 minutes, the 6-11
Duncan vanished, managing just three over the final three
quarters.  The two-time MVP was 5-of-16 from the field and
2-of-3 from the line.

But Parker - who entered with the third-highest field-goal
percentage (49 percent) among point guards - took control in the
third period for San Antonio, which trailed at the half, 41-40.

Elton Brand's layup 39 seconds into the quarter gave the
Clippers a three-point lead before Parker scored seven points
during an 8-0 run.  The 6-2 native of France also scored San
Antonio's last six points of the quarter to build a 65-55
cushion heading into the final 12 minutes.

Los Angeles, which had lost two straight and four of six, fought
back as Corey Maggette and center Chris Kaman combined for all
the points in an 11-0 burst that drew the Clippers within 74-72
with 2:50 remaining.

"There were a lot of times you could have just faded, folded,
packed it up.  But our guys stayed with it," Clippers coach Mike
Dunleavy said.  "We had some tremendous efforts out there.
Kaman's effort, just his energy alone, forget the numbers that
he put up, just how hard he played was a terrific sight.  He's
been doing it for us."

Kaman thoroughly outplayed his counterpart, scoring 21 points
while collecting 14 rebounds.

"It's always good to go up against the best players in the
league.  It's fun," Kaman said.

With just 19 seconds to go, Bobby Simmons made a pair of foul
shots to give Los Angeles a 79-78 edge.

"We had a few minutes of really bad basketball in the fourth
where we weren't hitting our shots and missed a few easy
layups," said San Antonio forward Bruce Bowen, who had five
points and seven rebounds.  "The situation went from good to
drastic in a couple of minutes down the stretch."

But after receiving a pass from Manu Ginobili and faking an
attempt at a 3-pointer from the left corner, Parker drove to the
net and converted a layup with 7.8 seconds to play, putting San
Antonio in front, 80-79.

"Manu did a good job of attacking the basket and hitting me in
the corner," Parker said.  "I wanted to shoot the three in the
corner, but they came at me so fast I had to pump-fake.  I
pump-faked and was able to get open.  I believe I need to
penetrate and make things happen."

"Tony showed patience on that last play," Spurs coach Gregg
Popovich said.  "He could have taken a 3-pointer but did not.
He showed a good headfake and went in aggressively."

The play came as no surprise to Dunleavy, who warned his team
during a timeout.

"We basically told them in the huddle what was going to happen,
that they were going to have a draw-and-kick play to Parker or
Ginobili was going to get the ball in the corner and they were
either going to shoot or attack," he said.  "At that point, I
would rather just make (Parker) shoot a contested shot.  He got
to the rim on us and Kaman came over to block and didn't want to
foul him and he hit that kind of corkscrew layup that just
rolled in for him."

"We knew it would be Tony or Tim Duncan," Brand said.  "We're up
one point and we had one of our best defenders on him and he
made a great shot.  We didn't contain Parker that well."

Brand had a chance to give the Clippers the win, but his jumper
was off the mark and Ginobili gathered the rebound to secure the
Spurs' league-leading 32nd victory.

"I had an opportunity and it just didn't drop," Brand said.  "It
was good defense.  I did have a good look.  It was just a tough
game."

Parker dished out seven assists, Ginobili scored 13 points and
Duncan pulled down 14 boards for San Antonio, which has won 12
of its last 15 games.  Coupled with Phoenix's loss, the Spurs
(32-9) now have the best record in the NBA.

"It was a really good win in a lot of ways against a team that
is playing well and having a good season," Popovich said.  "I
thought we executed well at the end of the game.  On a night
when we could have packed it in, the guys grinded it out."

Maggette scored 20 points and Brand added 14 and 18 boards for
the Clippers, who have dropped five straight to the Spurs.
