Game Story

INDIANAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Gilbert Arenas and Jermaine O'Neal put on an impressive offensive display before Antawn Jamison stole the show. Arenas scored 33 points and Jamison's runner with four-tenths of a second remaining lifted the Washington Wizards to 95-93 victory over O'Neal and the Indiana Pacers. Jamison scored 19 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for the Wizards, who have just two wins in 10 trips to Conseco Fieldhouse. Anthony Peeler's 3-pointer with 5:39 remaining gave Washington an 85-81 edge, but Indiana rallied behind O'Neal, who scored 22 of his 38 points in the second half. He hit a pair of free throws and Anthony Johnson followed with a game-tying jumper with 4:52 to go. O'Neal and Arenas traded a pair of baskets over the next two minutes before O'Neal's turnaround jumper snapped an 89-89 tie with 1:38 to go. "Jermaine O'Neal and Gilbert Arenas are both great players," Indiana coach Rick Carlisle said. "One guy scored and the other guy answered. It was classic." Brendan Haywood answered with a pair of free throws to tie it with 61 seconds remaining, but Jeff Foster buried a go-ahead baseline jumper just 22 seconds later. Arenas drilled a jumper from the baseline with 28 seconds remaining to pull Washington even, 93-93. O'Neal attempted to answer with five seconds remaining and two seconds left on the shot clock, but Haywood swatted his turnaround jumper out of bounds. Indiana was whistled for a shot-clock violation when Reggie Miller shot an airball. After a timeout, Jamison drove to the basket and banked the winning shot over Foster and O'Neal. "The play was designed for me to get free at the top of the key." Jamison said. "We drew it up based on what Gilbert had been doing all night. He started to come over the top, went back the other way and Foster sort of cheated towards him. I drove to his weak foot and had a clear lane to the basket." "That play was set up from the two plays before, when I was the shooter," Arenas said. "Antawn faked the pass to me, a couple of guys jumped over toward me, and he was able to drive the right lane for the Magic Johnson hook." Carlisle had a feeling who would take the last shot, but the Pacers still could not stop Jamison. "We thought it would be either Arenas or Jamison." Carlisle said. "He went to his strong side and made a good shot. They made the big plays when they had to down the stretch." Arenas made 12-of-26 shots, including three 3-pointers, for the Wizards, who shot 51 percent (18-of-35) in the second half. Haywood had 15 points, 10 rebounds and five blocked shots. Peeler, who had four 3-pointers, scored nine of his 16 points in the fourth quarter for Washington, which shot 47 percent (9-of-19) from the arc. O'Neal has scored 30 or more points in seven of his last 11 games, but the Pacers only have a 5-6 record over that stretch. Visibly frustrated, O'Neal had little to say about another close loss. "I really don't know what it's going to take to get over this," O'Neal said. "There's really no need to talk about it. We just have to get it done. You've seen our last few games coming off back-to-backs. ... I don't know what to tell you guys." Jamaal Tinsley scored 11 of his 16 points in the first half to help the Pacers to a 44-42 lead.
