Game StoryHOUSTON (Ticker) -- No Tracy McGrady, no problem for the Houston Rockets. Playing without their leading scorer, the Rockets got 22 points from Yao Ming and a season-high 19 from Jon Barry in an 89-78 victory over the Orlando Magic. The game was the second in five days between the teams involved in a seven-player blockbuster deal in the offseason in which McGrady and Magic guard Steve Francis were the key figures. Behind McGrady's 27 points, the Rockets won the first meeting since the trade besting Orlando 108-99 on Thursday. Without McGrady, who was attending to a family emergency, Houston was picked up by a stifling first-half defense that was responsible for opening a 48-27 cushion. The Magic shot 30 percent (11-of-37) and committed 12 turnovers before halftime, setting a franchise low for first-half scoring. Their previous low was 29 points at Indiana on November 22, 2002. The Rockets' strong start without McGrady did not surprise coach Jeff Van Gundy. "I think you underestimate professional athletes," Van Gundy said. "They think they can win regardless of who plays. Obviously you never want to miss someone of Tracy's magnitude over a period of time, but in a one-game situation you can overcome anybody's loss." Yao scored 16 points on 8-of-9 shooting and Barry had seven points, five rebounds and five assists before the break. "Not having (McGrady), we really made a focus to get the ball in the paint," said Barry, who hit a series of big shots in the second half. After Orlando cut the deficit to 61-49 late in the third, Barry hit a 3-pointer and a 15-footer in a span of 30 seconds to help Houston take a 67-51 lead into the fourth. The Magic got within 72-65 midway through the fourth on rookie Jameer Nelson's basket, but Barry responded with his third 3-pointer to push the lead to double digits. "Jon did a great job," Van Gundy said. "He gave us a cushion early and then hitting those two big shots when we were dead in the water (late) in the third quarter." The win was the Rockets' first in three tries without McGrady this season. "Anytime you lose your big gun you want to prove you can still get it done," said Barry, who was acquired December 23 in a trade with Atlanta. "Tracy's been playing great for us. You take 25 points out of the lineup, you have to make it up somewhere." In the first 24 minutes of his return to Houston, Francis was 1-of-8 with three turnovers. He recovered to finish with 23 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists but had seven of the Magic's 17 turnovers. Francis played five seasons with the Rockets and received mostly cheers when introduced before the game. "I am grateful for the ovation the fans gave me," said Francis, who shot 8-of-16 in the second half. "It felt different knowing this is where I started and this is where I learned to play the game. "I think it's difficult coming back, playing your first game," said Van Gundy, who coached Francis last season. "The first half was a bit of an aberration (for Francis)." Van Gundy said he wasn't sure whether McGrady would be back when Houston visits New Orleans on Tuesday. "I don't want to get used to it," Barry said. "I hope he's there."
