Game Story

MINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Trying to end their bad luck at the Target Center, the undermanned Detroit Pistons were blocked by Eddie Griffin. Griffin scored 14 points and blocked a season-high seven shots as the Minnesota Timberwolves continued their home success over the Pistons with an 86-83 victory. Having lost their previous seven games at the Target Center, the Pistons were shorthanded from the start with Richard Hamilton sitting out with a bruised right thigh. Starting small forward Tayshaun Prince also turned his right ankle 3:15 into the contest and did not return. "When you have guys out and hurt, everybody else has got to step up," Detroit center Ben Wallace said. "For the most part, everybody did. It was just unfortunate. It seemed as though it was a wasted effort because of how the game went." The Timberwolves took advantage of the depleted Pistons and opened a 46-32 lead with 3:34 left in the first half on Griffin's 3-pointer. He made all three of his shots from the arc in the half, helping the Timberwolves to a 48-39 cushion. But the Pistons clawed back in the second half thanks to aggressive offensive rebounding and the Timberwolves' poor shooting. Minnesota went without a field goal in the third quarter after a jumper by Kevin Garnett with 9:10 remaining. Detroit's surge culminated with a 72-71 lead with 8:04 left in the fourth quarter on recently acquired Carlos Arroyo's jumper. Garnett responded with a jumper and made two free throws to make it 77-74 with 5:50 remaining. After a jumper by Chauncey Billups cut the Pistons' deficit to 80-79 with 2:03 left, Griffin converted two free throws 25 seconds later. With Minnesota clinging to a 82-81 lead with less than a minute remaining, Griffin stepped up again, blocking Arroyo's layup attempt with 26 seconds left. It was Griffin's final block of the evening, matching a career high he set against the Dallas Mavericks on January 31, 2002 as a member of the Houston Rockets. "(Griffin) was huge," Minnesota guard Troy Hudson said. "I feel great with Eddie behind me. If I get beat off the dribble, I know he is going to be there to contest the shot or get a block." Detroit was frustrated by the officiating all night, particularly after Griffin's block. "We got cheated," Detroit coach Larry Brown said. "It was a goaltend on Carlos. It hit the board. This has been happening too much. It's a joke." Anthony Carter and Fred Hoiberg added two free throws each in the 22 seconds for the Timberwolves, who went 9-of-10 at the line in the final 5:50. "That's why (coach) Flip (Saunders) put me in there was to try to get to the line and knock them down," Hoiberg said. "You've shot a million of them in your life, so you just go through your routine and step up with confidence." Garnett scored 22 points and grabbed nine rebounds for Minnesota, which won despite getting beat on the glass, 51-36. The Timberwolves have split 10 games since Sam Cassell went down with a strained right hamstring. "We fought hard. Our effort was good," Billups said. "We just came up a little short." Billups scored 22 points and Ben Wallace added 11 and 13 rebounds for Detroit, which shot 37 percent (32-of-86) in its fourth straight loss. The Pistons have lost 12 of their last 15 games against the Timberwolves.
