Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Coming off the bench for the first time this season, Corey Maggette scored 16 of his 20 points in the fourth quarter as the Los Angeles Clippers posted a 105-89 triumph over the Los Angeles Lakers. Maggette, who did not start due to a sore left foot, was limited to just four points on 1-of-5 shooting through three quarters. "I feel pretty good," Maggette said."We won and that's what it is all about. We share the same arena with these guys and we see them all the time so it is somewhat personal when we play against them. Each time we play there is a little something added to the contest. So it is good that we came out. Got the win and played the right way." Despite Maggette's struggles, the Clippers - led by the strong interior presence of Elton Brand and Chris Kaman - held a 70-59 lead entering the final period. Clippers coach Mike Dunleavy told his team how the Clippers were going to handle the Lakers. "I think I said before the game that it would be how hard we played Lamar (Odom) off the dribble and how well they could play our big guys inside," Dunleavy said. "We wanted to take away their inside game and our guys really did a good job of that." Stanislav Medvedenko scored seven of his nine points during an 11-4 run that got the Lakers within 75-71 with 8:03 remaining. But the Clippers responded with a decisive 17-4 outburst over the next four minutes. Maggette started the streak with a pair of free throws and finished with eight points during the run, including a jumper with 4:09 remaining to give the Clippers a 92-75 cushion. Brand had 28 points and 14 rebounds and Kaman added 14 and a career-high 16 boards as the Clippers dominated inside, outrebounding the Lakers, 51-39. Kaman also blocked a career-best five shots. "I hope we are on a level to compete with them," Kaman said. "After awhile you get tired of hearing about the Lakers. It is a big excuse that Kobe (Bryant) sat out. He averages something like 27 points a game and five or six rebounds. He's huge, the main person they give the ball to all the time. I was happy to get the win without him and when he comes back we'll play the same way with some obvious changes in our defensive patterns." Brand had a different outlook on Bryant's not being available for two or three more weeks. "It wasn't any difference tonight that Kobe wasn't playing," Brand said. "We're missing four of our top eight. A win is a win. It is always a little special when you play the Lakers, but a little too much yellow for me. "They have a lot of 3-point shooters," Brand added. "That alone really separates the style of these two teams." Bobby Simmons scored 21 points on 8-of-10 shooting and Marko Jaric matched a season-high with 11 assists for the Clippers, who shot 50 percent (20-of-40) in the second half. The win also snapped the Clippers' five-game losing streak to the Lakers. "It is important to us to find the right chemistry," Jarik said. "And to get back our confidence and try to win a couple more games here at home because we have a long trip in February. It is going to be a break out month for us and we need to show the others that we are a playoff team." Chucky Atkins scored 17 points and Caron Butler added 16 for the Lakers, whose record fell to 3-3 since Bryant went on the injured list. "I thought Kaman did a terrific job playing out on the perimeter," Dunleavy said. "Then he played the small guys off the dribble and handled the pick-and-roll and handled the boards." Odom, who was limited to just eight points, received a second technical foul with 3:56 left to play in the game and was ejected from the game. He watched the balance of the game from the locker room. "I was in foul trouble," Odom said. "I watched the game with you guys. I didn't play. A bad game is when you miss shots and don't play defense. When I was on the court I felt like I was effective." Brian Cook scored 14 points in 25 minutes but felt the Clippers overpowered the Lakers. "They beat us real bad on the boards," Cook said. "We didn't having anything to counter it and we turned the ball over 20 times. They capitalized on that a lot."
