Game StoryNEW ORLEANS (Ticker) -- Tracy McGrady returned, but Scott Padgett again stole the show. Padgett scored seven points in the final seven minutes, including a go-ahead 3-pointer with 28 seconds remaining, as the Houston Rockets won their fourth straight game, an 82-77 victory over the New Orleans Hornets. On Friday, Padgett hit an off-balance floater at the buzzer to give Houston a 92-91 road victory over the New York Knicks. The reserve forward came through with another clutch shot, drilling a 3-pointer from the top of the key to snap 73-73 tie. "The best thing that ever happened to me early in my career was that I wasn't ready and I failed in some situations like that," Padgett said. "You learn the hard way, and you get yourself to where you're in great shape and prepare yourself for every game. And when you get yourself in those opportunities, just try to make the most of them. You never know when they're going to come in this league." For a while it appeared the Rockets would not get an opportunity to extend their winning streak. New Orleans, trying for its fifth consecutive home victory, took its biggest lead at 67-57 on P.J. Brown's jumper with 10:03 remaining. But McGrady and Padgett led Houston (24-19) on a game-tying 14-4 run during the next six-plus minutes. McGrady, who missed Tuesday's 89-78 victory over Orlando due to a family emergency, scored six of his 33 points during the outburst and Padgett hit a pair of jumpers after going scoreless over the first three quarters. Yao Ming, who had 12 points and 13 rebounds, hit a hook with 3:40 remaining to tie it, 71-71. Lee Nailon answered with a basket 1:33 later before McGrady set up Padgett's heroics by hitting a pair of free throws with 42 seconds to go. "He was wide open. Absolutely wide open," McGrady said of Padgett's go-ahead 3-pointer. "I (acted) like I was trying to go to the hole, and the help stayed on me, so I just kicked it to him. He took his time and knocked down the shot. McGrady did not hesitate to dish the ball to his teammate. "I have confidence in all my guys," McGrady said. "If I'm double-teamed, I'm going to try to make the right play. I trust that they shoot the ball and shot it with confidence." "It was a great play by Tracy to trust his teammate, and I was very happy for Scott that he knocked it down," Houston coach Jeff Van Gundy said. "(Padgett) puts a lot of time in shooting the ball." It wasn't the first time Padgett was a hero in New Orleans. As a senior at Kentucky, he hit a 3-pointer late in regulation to force overtime in a 92-88 victory against Kansas in the second round of the 1999 NCAA Tournament. "I like this place," Padgett said. "Playing in New Orleans, I had some good games here in college." Houston scored 11 points on its last five possessions, including 8-of-8 from the line. McGrady scored 18 points in the first half to give Houston a 41-39 lead. But New Orleans battled back in the third quarter, using a 14-3 run to take a 63-55 lead entering the final period. Dan Dickau, starting for the fifth straight game at point guard in place of injured All-Star Baron Davis (bruised right ankle), had 23 points and a career-high 10 assists for New Orleans (7-34). Nailon and Brown each added 17, and Brown grabbed 10 rebounds. "We've had so many games like that, so it's frustrating," said Dickau, who led the Hornets in scoring for the third straight game. "We had been making progress, figuring out how to close out games . . . and took a step back. We didn't make shots. And then (the Rockets) hit some big shots and made their free throws down the stretch and did not give us a chance to make it a one-possession game."
