Game Story

BOSTON (Ticker) - One dozen Boston Celtics proved to be no match for the Phoenix Suns' duo of Amare Stoudemire and Steve Nash. Stoudemire scored 42 points and Nash added 13 and 15 assists as the Suns rolled to their fourth straight win, a 128-119 victory over the Celtics. Despite using just seven players, the Suns scored over 120 points for the third straight game and improved to 3-0 on their six-game road trip. Phoenix came out running in the first half. Stoudemire scored 21 points and Nash had 10 assists as Phoenix shot a blistering 59 percent (29-of-49) en route to a 74-48 lead. The first-half points were a season high for the Suns. "In the first half, I came out aggressive," Stoudemire said. "I really wanted to come out agressive the first quarter. The last two games we came out kind of slow in the first quarter and I decided to come out with a little intensity." "The first half was probably the best we can play," Phoenix coach Mike D'Antoni said. "I knew we couldn't duplicate it in the second half and shoot 70 percent both halves, and fought all the way down to the end." With Nash sidelined by a hip injury, Phoenix lost three consecutive games and Stoudemire averaged just under 17 points. In the five games since Nash's return, the Suns are 4-1 and Stoudemire has scored over 32 points per game. "It is easy once you have a point guard that can pass as well as he can," Stoudemire said. "It makes the game easy." Quentin Richardson scored 17 of his 23 points and hit five of his seven 3-pointers to help the Suns jump out to the halftime lead. "I think we put our heads down when they made tough threes and got to the hoop," Celtics guard Paul Pierce said. "I think that kind of discouraged our defense and it took us until halftime for us to really say forget the scoreboard." Jimmy Jackson added 17 points and five 3-pointers off the bench as Phoenix shot 52 percent (13-of-25) from the arc. Over the last five games, the Suns are averaging 13 3-pointers while burying 49 percent (65-of-132). Jackson, who was acquired in a trade with the New Orleans Hornets on January 21, has had little trouble fitting into the offense, scoring in double figures in three straight games. "He has adjusted well because all we do is play ball and push the ball up and down the floor," Suns forward Shawn Marion said. "It is easy for a new guy because all he has to do is get open and shoot the ball." Marion added 16 points and 11 boards as six Phoenix players scored in double figures. Despite trailing by as many as 26 points, Boston battled back. Coach Doc Rivers inserted small lineup and the Celtics responded, shooting 62 percent (28-of-48) in the second half to make the final score respectable. "We lost focus a little bit but you have to have to give them credit," Marion said. "They came back out in the second half ready to play but we kept our composure though and we kept our heads in it even though they made a good run at us." Pierce scored 20 of his 34 points in the second half as the Celtics used all 12 players while trying to keep up with the fast-paced offense of the Suns. Rookie Tony Allen scored 11 of his 17 points and Ricky Davis added 15 of his 19 after halftime for the Celtics, who have lost three straight to the Suns at the FleetCenter.
