Game Story

PORTLAND, Oregon (Ticker) -- The Los Angeles Clippers seemed on the verge of ending their losing streak at the Rose Garden. Then Portland Trail Blazers guard Damon Stoudamire took over. Stoudamire scored 18 of his 22 points in the second half as the Trail Blazers rallied for their 12th straight home victory over the Clippers, 90-86. Elton Brand's two free throws gave Los Angeles a 62-52 lead with 3:15 left in the third quarter. But Stoudamire led a 16-5 burst over the next four-plus minutes to give Portland a 68-67 edge. "I just got a groove going and was able to give us a spark," Stoudamire said. "We aren't playing smart," Brand said of the Clippers' problems in Portland. "We had a nice lead there in the third quarter, thought like we could go somewhere with it, but we couldn't. (We're) just not playing smart here and that's what it boils down to." Stoudamire scored eight points during the run, including a 3-pointer 79 seconds in the fourth quarter, to cap the spree and give the Trail Blazers their first lead of the second half. "I used to struggle a bit and maybe I wouldn't get those shots back," said Stoudamire, who shot just 2-of-9 in the first half. "Now it's okay if I miss a few in a row. I can keep it going and it allows me to hit maybe four, five, six in a row." Brand buried a jumper with 6:11 to go to tie the score, 75-75, before Portland opened an 85-77 lead with a 10-2 run over the next four minutes. Nick Van Exel, Zach Randolph and rookie Sebastian Telfair each had a basket before Ruben Patterson scored four straight points, closing the spurt with 1:55 to go. Telfair scored seven of his 11 points in the fourth quarter for the Blazers, who shot 56 percent (10-of-18) in the final period to complete the come-from-behind victory. "I thought our game picked up as it went on," Blazer coach Maurice Cheeks said. "We looked flat early on. Obviously, we win games when our guards make shots. Our guards didn't make shots early on." Joel Przybilla had 10 points and 14 rebounds and Randolph added 13 and 10 off the bench as the Trail Blazers outrebounded the Clippers, 49-40. Brand totalled 26 points and 12 rebounds to pace Los Angeles, which has not won in Portland since April 10, 1999 and has dropped 19 of 20 overall in the Rose City. The Clippers used an early 12-2 run to gain a 19-12 lead, then pushed their advantage to 35-24 midway through the second period. Portland closed within 48-30 at the half. "We should have been up 15 or 16 in the first half," Clippers coach Mike Dunleavy said. "We had a ton of open looks but just couldn't knock them down. We didn't deserve to win tonight." "I haven't lost 12 in a row here and neither have these players," Dunleavy added. "We'll come in here next year and get one." Bobby Simmons added 16 points for the Clippers but was just 7-of-26 field. "Hopefully, it's my last bad shooting night," Simmons said. "Those are shots that usually go in for me. Tonight they ran out."
