Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- Gary Payton and the Boston Celtics spoiled a nearly perfect January for rookie Ben Gordon and the Chicago Bulls. Payton scored 23 points and hit a key 3-pointer late in the fourth quarter as the Celtics rallied for a 101-97 victory that halted the Bulls' five-game winning streak. Chicago had won a season-high seven consecutive games before losing at Boston on January 19. The Bulls finished January with a 13-3 record, losing twice to the Celtics. "We just play, we're playing and they have been playing good basketball," Payton said. "We kept fighting and kept fighting and there was a lot of chitter-chatter about these two games, and how they were playing. We decided that we were going to stop that." Celtics guard Paul Pierce did not think that the team played with more intensity because it was against the Bulls. "We have to get up to play everybody. We are not the Phoenix Suns or the San Antonio Spurs," Pierce said. Gordon scored 25 of his season-high 31 points in the second half. "I thought if it had not been for Ben Gordon we would have gotten beaten handily in the second half," Bulls coach Scott Skiles said. Gordon buried his fifth 3-pointer with 3:15 remaining to give Chicago a 95-90 lead. Raef LaFrentz answered with a 3-pointer 15 seconds later and Paul Pierce followed with a pair of free throws to tie it, 95-95, with 2:41 to go. Eddy Curry's layup gave the Bulls the lead, but Ricky Davis answered with a basket of to pull the Celtics even with 2:05 remaining. Mark Blount blocked Gordon's runner and Payton buried a 3-pointer on the ensuing possession to give Boston the lead for good with 1:43 left. "It may have been the (best) finish to a game all year," Davis said. "We got a few big stops when we needed to." Payton made 8-of-15 shots. He scored 15 points in the first half as the teams battled to a 49-49 tie at the intermission. Davis scored 24 points off the bench and Pierce added 18 and 15 rebounds for Boston, which has won three of its last four games. Midway through the third quarter, Gordon snapped a 56-56 tie with a 3-pointer and scored 11 points during the ensuing 16-3 run that gave the Bulls a 72-59 lead with 2:03 left. Rookie Andres Nocioni's free throw gave Chicago a 77-68 lead 23 seconds into the final period before Boston took an 80-79 lead with a 12-2 run over the next three-plus minutes. Jiri Welsch and Walter McCarty each hit 3-pointers during that stretch. "This was a great win for us," Rivers said. "When you consider where we were last night (against Phoenix) to where we were tonight, this win is unbelievable."
