Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- The Philadelphia 76ers found their path to victory blocked by Erick Dampier, so Kyle Korver went over him. Korver scored 12 of his 16 points in a seesaw fourth quarter as the 76ers scrambled without Allen Iverson for a 93-89 victory over the cold-shooting Mavericks. John Salmons scored a season-high 19 points off the bench for the 76ers, who won for the first time this season in five games without Iverson, the NBA scoring leader who sat out his third straight contest with a shoulder strain. The Sixers led for most of the game and held an 80-73 advantage with less than 10 1/2 minutes to play. But they went scoreless for almost six minutes as they were thwarted by the inside presence of Dampier. When the 6-11 center wasn't blocking shots, he was changing them and pulling down the rebound. He collected 14 points, a career-high 26 rebounds and a season-high seven blocks. With Dampier supplying the defense, Dallas scored 11 straight points, opening an 84-80 lead on a jumper by Jerry Stackhouse with 4:50 to play. That's when Korver came alive. The second-year sharpshooter made a lane jumper. After a free throw by Stackhouse and a drive by Sixers rookie Andre Iguodala, Korver sank a 3-pointer to give Philadelphia an 87-85 lead with 2:56 left. Stackhouse made a jumper, but Korver sank two free throws to give the Sixers the lead for good with 2:23 to go. Dallas missed shots on three straight possessions before Corliss Williamson sank a pair from the line with 44 seconds to play. Jason Terry halved the deficit with a jumper and Dampier blocked a drive by Salmons to give the Mavericks a chance to tie. But Terry missed a jumper and Korver corraled his 10th rebound before sinking the clinching foul shots with 11 seconds remaining. As a rookie last season, Korver made five 3-pointers at the American Airlines Center, fueling a comeback that came up short in overtime. In this one, he was 2-of-5 from the arc, running his NBA-leading 3-pointer total to 121. Williamson scored 13 points and Kenny Thomas added 12 for the Sixers, who held a 42-5 edge in bench points and won the battle of the boards, 51-50, despite the determination of Dampier. Dirk Nowitzki scored 25 points and Stackhouse added 16 for Dallas, which had won six of its last seven games. Nowitzki (7-of-25) and Michael Finley (6-of-23) were the prime culprits as the Mavericks shot under 37 percent (33-of-90).
