Game Story

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- The streaky Detroit Pistons are on another run. The New York Knicks cannot fall much further. Richard Hamilton scored 18 points and Chauncey Billups and Antonio McDyess added 16 apiece as the Pistons posted a 91-61 rout of the reeling Knicks. New York's points represented a season low and is just three points better than the worst offensive showing in franchise history. The Knicks scored 58 against Utah on December 15, 2000. It also marked a season low for a Detroit opponent. "We couldn't make a shot," said New York interim coach Herb Williams, whose club shot 36 percent (26-of-72) from the field. "They're a very good defensive team, but we had open shots, open looks. It just wasn't going down for us tonight." The Knicks' poor effort helped Detroit win its third straight game. The Pistons won six in a row earlier this month before dropping four straight. Detroit improved to 9-1 against Atlantic Division teams, including 6-0 at home. It moved into a tie with Cleveland atop the Central Division at 26-18. Both teams were sluggish in the first half, which ended with the Pistons holding a 39-35 lead. Billups, who matched a season high with 10 assists, scored seven points during a 19-6 run early in the third quarter that gave the Pistons a 58-43 advantage. New York was held to just six baskets thereafter as Detroit cruised. "I think we know that the second half of the season is upon us, so we've just got to get our act together (on defense)," forward Rasheed Wallace said. "So far, so good." Jamal Crawford and Stephon Marbury were the only Knicks to score in double figures with 14 and 10 points, respectively. "Tonight we had a tough time making shots," Crawford said. "The way they play, if you're down 10, it's like being down 20. We hung in there and gave it a valiant effort. We just couldn't make shots." New York began its season-high six-game road trip in dismal fashion and has dropped 12 of its last 14 games. "We didn't get this road trip off to a very good start," forward Kurt Thomas said. "We played pretty well in the first half, but we just couldn't hit a shot in the third quarter. Give the Pistons a lot of credit for that, because they play great defense." Injuries played a role in the game on all fronts. New York rookie Trevor Ariza, who was making his fourth straight start, hurt his ankle at the end of the third period and did not return. Detroit guard Carlos Arroyo fractured his nose and will undergo surgery Monday. He is doubtful for games Tuesday and Wednesday and will need a mask when he returns. Referee Michael Smith had to leave the game with 3:50 left in the second quarter after getting hit in the face with the ball earlier in the period. Ben Wallace, who had eight points and 11 rebounds, thought the Pistons' defense might have been helped by Smith's absence. "One of the officials went down so you can get away with a lot more," Wallace said. "Once one of the officials goes down, you can be a little more aggressive because two guys can't see everything out there."
