Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- The Los Angeles Clippers' duo of Elton Brand and Zeljko Rebraca took advantage of the shorthanded Golden State Warriors to make history. Brand scored 27 points and Rebraca had 19 and a career-high 16 rebounds as the Clippers held on for a 96-85 victory and completed the first season sweep of the Warriors in franchise history. Brand, however, placed no significance on the Clippers' milestone sweep of the hapless Warriors, who have dropped 14 of their last 15 games, including five in a row. "It's just four wins," added Brand. "Just winning, that's the most important thing." Golden State was without two of its better post players. Power forward Troy Murphy was sidelined after fracturing his left thumb against the Seattle SuperSonics and forward Cliff Robinson was limited to just five minutes with a stiff lower back. In their absence, Los Angeles outrebounded Golden State, 54-34, and scored 21 second-chance points while grabbing a franchise-record 21 offensive rebounds. "That's what we really wanted to do, to pound it inside, especially with Murphy out," Brand added. "But if he were there it would have been the same thing." "Our biggest problem was rebounding," Warriors coach Mike Montgomery said. "We got outrebounded by 20. We knew we were undersized with Cliff and Troy out and that we were going up against it with only three post players." Rebraca, who had six offensive rebounds, was 6-of-9 from the floor and hit all seven of his free throws. "It was good for sure, my best game this season," Rebraca said. "But it was one game, I have to continue like this." Brand was forced to the bench after he was whistled for two fouls in the first three minutes. Rebraca stepped up in his place, scoring 17 points in the first half to help the Clippers battle to a 49-49 tie at the break. "I just tried to step up and play hard," said Rebraca, who was averaging 3.5 points and 2.1 rebounds coming into the game. "When you play more minutes, you feel more comfortable. The last month I played between 15-20 minutes. I feel much better with the team. It was good." "Rebraca really stepped up, and I was hitting my shots," said Brand, who ended a streak of nine consecutive double-doubles. "'Z' really has a lot of moves down there. He has a wide arsenal of moves, up and unders, jump shots, fakes. We see it in practice, so it was good to see it in a game." After playing just 11 minutes in the first half, a rested Brand scored five straight points as Los Angeles went on a 10-2 run over the first 3 1/2 minutes of the second half. Rick Brunson's jumper capped the burst and gave the Clippers a 59-51 lead. Calbert Cheaney's three-point play reduced the deficit to 87-83 with 4:46 remaining, but the Clippers answered with a decisive 8-0 spurt over the next three minutes. Brand triggered it with an 11-footer and Rebraca added a jumper. "Once we blew that 12-point lead, I had to step up," Brand said. "Take some shots and get guys shots." Brunson scored 17 points - making a career-high five 3-pointers - and added eight assists. Marko Jaric added 10 points and a career-high 12 assists. Jason Richardson scored 29 points and Mike Dunleavy Jr. added 22. "Jason was exhausted," said teammate Derek Fisher, who finished with 12 points. "We're riding him. We're short on bodies, especially without Troy Murphy, who is one of our key offensive guys. Jason is just working extremely hard on the offensive end as well as the defensive end. He's trying to do everything for us to win." Due to their woeful season, Fisher said it was no embarrassment to get swept by the Clippers. "Maybe in the past but not for team in our position," Fisher said. "We can't take it as a slight or an embarrassment when your playing against teams in this league and you're not as successful as you'd like to. But we're not in the position to have that attitude yet no matter who it is."
