Game StorySAN ANTONIO (Ticker) -- The San Antonio Spurs got it going late, enabling them to hit the road flying. Tim Duncan had four of his 12 points in a key stretch that opened the fourth quarter and Tony Parker added 23 as the league-best Spurs posted a 93-83 triumph over the league-worst New Orleans Hornets. San Antonio (36-10) was clinging to a 73-69 advantage through three quarters when Duncan ignited an 8-0 spurt to open the period. He had a layup 40 seconds into the quarter and added two free throws with 8:58 to go. Brent Barry added a pair from the line before Bruce Bowen capped the spurt with a layup with 6:36 remaining. "In the fourth quarter, we were focusing on our defense," Duncan said. "All of our games depend on our defense," Spurs forward Manu Ginobili said. "They scored what, 14 points in the last quarter? So that's who we are and everything gets easier for us when we do that." The Spurs hit the road for a seven-game trip that runs into the All-Star break. San Antonio will not have another game at the SBC Center - where they are a league-best 23-1 - until February 23. "I am always looking forward to this road trip," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "I always have fun. It is a great opportunity to learn a lot of things, and to really establish something on the road. No matter what we do win-loss wise, we will learn a lot about each other and be able to do things in hostile environments night after night." "I guess I am looking forward to it," Duncan said. "Such a long time on the road. ... It is a great time for us as a team. We learn a lot about ourselves when we go on the road for an extended period of time. Every night becomes a good learning night." Dan Dickau led New Orleans (8-35) with 16 points. Rookie J.R. Smith chipped in 13 for the Hornets, who never led and fell to 2-22 on the road this season. "I'm proud of these guys, I'm proud of the way they played," Hornets coach Byron Scott said. "They fought back and they've come a long way since the first time we faced this team." Bowen scored four points and Parker and Ginobili added three apiece as San Antonio opened the game with a 10-0 run. The Spurs led, 33-21, after 12 minutes - their most points in the opening period this season - and held a 40-29 advantage five minutes into the second quarter. The Hornets used a 16-5 burst to get back in the contest and were within 52-49 at the break. New Orleans trailed just 72-69 following a free throw by Dickau with 27 seconds to go in the third quarter, but Parker hit a free throw 20 seconds later. The Hornets went cold to start the final period as they missed their first 10 shots, three by Casey Jacobsen. By the time P.J. Brown broke through with a jumper, New Orleans trailed, 81-71. "That (defense) is who we are and how we win," Popovich added. "It allows us to get things done. Some nights shots are not going to drop for you but you can always control your defense and we did that in the fourth quarter. I thought we did a really fine job." The Hornets never got closer than six the rest of the way. "It's tough," Dickau said. "Giving them the bonus so early (in the fourth quarter) put us on our heels, not wanting to foul. When you do that you give up the penetration so much easier. That and we had a couple of bad possessions late and you just can't do that against the Spurs." The Hornets committed 16 turnovers and missed 5-of-13 free throws. The Spurs were 20-of-30 from the line.
