Game Story

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- There was just too much Vince Carter for the Chicago Bulls to handle. Carter scored 29 of his 31 points in the first three quarters as the surging New Jersey Nets won their season-high fourth straight game with a 107-97 victory over the Bulls. Named Eastern Conference Player of the Week on Monday, Carter recorded his third consecutive 30-point game and handed out six assists, helping the Nets to their seventh win in nine outings. Carter has tried to pick up slack for the injury-plagued Nets, who find their bench getting shorter. He made 10-of-19 shots, including an array of acrobatic drives against the physical Bulls' defense. Prior to the game, New Jersey placed guard Rodney Buford and forward Brian Scalabrine on the injured list, where they join star forward Richard Jefferson. Zoran Planinic and Ron Mercer also were unavailable with injuries. Jason Kidd scored a season-high 26 points, tied a season high with 13 rebounds and handed out nine assists. Vaughn started in place of Buford and tied his career-high with 23 points and gave the Nets an unexpected lift. "It felt good to come off a West Coast trip and protect our home court and get a win," Vaughn said. "Vince and J-Kidd set the whole table tonight - silverware, napkins and everything. That's a tribute to how they can set things up." "Jacque was great tonight," Kidd said. "His name was called in a sense of starting with all the injuries. He took open shots, went to the hole aggressively and did everything we could ask for." After trailing by one point at the half, New Jersey broke open the contest with a 23-5 run to start the third quarter. Carter had 10 points during the burst, including a three-point play where he spun in the lane and hit a high-arching layup as he was fouled by Othella Harrington. "I felt really comfortable and (I'm) starting to get into a groove," Carter said. "Guys are just focusing on their shots more. Now, if a guy isn't playing well, you really can't sub for him because we don't have many players." "This was a game where Vince probably could have scored as much as he wanted to," Chicago coach Scott Skiles said. Carter followed with a 3-pointer and Vaughn scored four straight points before Jabari Smith capped the run with a jumper, giving New Jersey its biggest lead, 71-54, with 5:49 to go in the third period. Jannero Pargo scored seven consecutive points in the fourth quarter and Kirk Hinrich hit a layup to cut Chicago's deficit to 88-81 with 5:39 left. But Kidd nailed a jumper on the next possession and added two more shots down the stretch that destroyed any chances of a comeback by Chicago. Hinrich scored 18 points despite 5-of-16 shooting and rookie Ben Gordon came off the bench to add 17 for Chicago, which has lost its last six meetings with New Jersey. After posting a 13-3 record in January, the Bulls began a five-game road trip by losing consecutive games for the first time since December 26-28, which also included a setback to the Nets. "Every individual in (the locker) room has to figure out what we have to do," Hinrich said. "Change it and get it back to where it was when we were really clicking."
