Game Story

NEW ORLEANS (Ticker) -- Dirk Nowitzki and Jerry Stackhouse keyed yet another Dallas Mavericks' victory over the New Orleans Hornets. Nowitzki scored 20 points and Stackhouse added 19 off the bench to lead the Mavericks to their 11th consecutive victory over the Hornets, a 90-82 triumph. Dallas has not lost in the series since a 104-99 road setback on November 17, 1999, when the Hornets were in Charlotte, while winning every game by an average of 10.6 points. "(Dallas) has our number. I don't know what it is," Hornets center P.J. Brown said. "They have a lot of great shooters on the perimeter. Defensively, I don't think we're physical enough with them. You have to set the tone early with them defensively and try to get them out of their rhythm." "We seem to match up with (the Hornets) well," said Dallas guard Michael Finley, who scored 12 points. "Offensively, we seem to get things clicking. That's no knock on their personnel, because it's changed. Whenever we do play them, we hit them at a time when we're playing great basketball." After winning just 16 road games last season, the Mavericks are 13-6 away from home this season. They have won nine of their last 12 on the road and 13 of their last 17 overall. Dallas had little difficulty in this one, leading by eight points after the first quarter. After a 3-pointer by Dan Dickau pulled New Orleans within 37-31 with 7:01 left in the second period, Dallas went on a 10-3 run to take a double-digit lead that they maintained until the final minute of the contest. The Mavericks took their largest lead at 61-40 on a three-point play by Nowitzki with 10:32 left in the third quarter. Plagued by a sinus infection, the All-Star forward connected on just 7-of-21 shots. But Nowitzki wasn't complaining. "Actually, I felt a hundred percent better than last night," he said. "It was almost to the point where I wasn't going to play (against Miami on Tuesday). But today I felt good. I got a lot of sleep last night. My jump shot was off, but Friday (at Indiana) we've got to take our game to another level." Stackhouse followed his 24-point performance against Miami by connecting on 6-of-11 shots and 7-of-8 free throws. The first-year Maverick continues to shine as the team's sixth man. "I feel cool," said Stackhouse, who is averaging 15.7 points. "It's been a great experience for me, to be on a team that really has a chance to go far and play for a championship. The longer I've been here, I've been able to adjust even more to my role and to what we're doing." Rookie Devin Harris scored 12 for Dallas, and Erick Dampier had his third double-double in four games with 11 points and 14 rebounds. Dickau scored 18 points against the team that traded him December 3. Dickau led the Hornets in scoring for the sixth time in seven games and has averaged 20.3 points in the last eight home contests.
