Game Story

BOSTON (Ticker) -- After relinquishing two 10-point leads, the Boston Celtics rallied behind Raef LaFrentz to beat the Orlando Magic again. LaFrentz scored seven of his 19 points in the final 10-plus minutes as the Celtics rallied to post their seventh straight home win over the Magic, 112-100. Boston built 10-point advantages in the first and second quarters but still found itself trailing, 94-85, in the final period before closing out the contest on a 27-6 spurt. "I thought early on the first (quarter), we scored so easily I thought it was a trap for us," Celtics coach Doc Rivers said. "I thought we got lax there for a good quarter and a half because of that and got them back in the game. But to fight back like that, I thought that was as much a team win as we've had all year." After scoring 21 points on 9-of-12 shooting Wednesday against New Jersey, LaFrentz connected on 8-of-12 shots, including an alley-oop to level the contest at 98-98 at the 4:04 mark. Following a layup by Paul Pierce, who collected 18 points and a season-high five steals, LaFrentz drilled a 3-pointer from the left corner, making it 103-98 with 2:31 to go. "I'm trying to find the hole, get some rebounds and get back on defense and pop the occasional 3-ball," LaFrentz said. "We kind of have an up-and-down style of ball but it's better to be able to turn it on than not be able to do it at all." "Raef has been stepping up his game as of late," said Pierce, who has nine steals in his last two games. "He has been really finding his groove and putting some nice games together and that's what we are going to need." Gary Payton collected 17 points and eight assists and Walter McCarty made a pair of 3-pointers in the decisive run for the Celtics, who improved to 3-0 over the Magic this season. "I think those guys have our number and until we beat them," Magic coach Johnny Davis said. "This is the third game we have played them and this is the first time we have actually been in the building with them." Still suffering from the effects of the flu-like symptoms that forced him to leave Wednesday's game at halftime, reserve Ricky Davis played inspired basketball in the final period, collecting four points, four assists and five rebounds. However, his coach was very concerned of what the effort was doing to his sixth man. "I thought Ricky was going to die, honestly," Rivers said. "We actually contemplated taking him out on the defensive rotation, but we were scared that they wouldn't call the timeout or we would have to use our timeouts to get him back on offense. He had nothing left; I mean he really didn't." Orlando's Steve Francis scored 14 of his 26 points in the first quarter before fouling out with 2:39 to play. Reserve Hedo Turkoglu scored eight of Orlando's 12 points in the final period, finishing with 22 points. "We turned it over too much, I (messed) this up," said Francis, who had four giveaways. "We had 23 turnovers, that is unbelievable. We had 23 turnovers that took us out of it. In the last few minutes we must have turned it over like 12-13 times." Grant Hill was less than stellar in his first game since being named an All-Star starter Thursday. The seven-time All-Star scored just eight points and had two of the team's seven fourth-quarter turnovers and five in the contest. "We tried to go to Grant and Hedo because they are finishers for us, but obviously not having Steve available certainly alters what we do but that is not the reason we lost the game tonight," Davis said. "The story of the game was our careless play with the basketball and the turnovers."
