Game Story

INDIANAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Anthony Johnson finally made Jamaal Tinsley's absence a non-factor, helping the Indiana Pacers break a long losing streak. Johnson scored a season-high 21 points and made big plays down the stretch as the Pacers held on for a 95-94 victory over the Dallas Mavericks. The Pacers had lost six in a row - one shy of their season high - and were 0-7 this season without Tinsley, who missed his second straight game with a sprained left ankle. "Whenever you have a key guy out, it's important for the other guys to step up in their place," Johnson said. "Tonight was my chance to step up and try to help get a win. I just took my time and used the screens I had to knock down some open shots." After Fred Jones' 3-pointer early in the fourth quarter gave Indiana its largest lead, 83-72, the Pacers were held to just one basket over the next six-plus minutes as the Mavericks chipped away. Johnson, who made all seven of his shots, hit his third 3-pointer to break the spell and give Indiana a 90-84 lead with 2:25 left. "He did a lot of big things tonight down the stretch," Pacers coach Rick Carlisle said. "We had a late shot clock in the fourth quarter and he hit a huge three. He's been struggling with illness and injury and he just about had a perfect game tonight. He was due to break out." Johnson recently got over a bout with pneumonia and was making just his fifth start this season. His 3-pointer was the Pacers' only basket in the final 5 1/2 minutes. After Johnson's shot, Dallas managed to hold Indiana scoreless for another 2:03 and had a chance to tie in the closing seconds, but Dirk Nowitzki's turnaround jumper fell short. Austin Croshere was fouled while rebounding and made a pair of free throws for a 93-89 lead. Nowitzki hit a long 3-pointer with seven seconds left to pull the Mavericks within a point, but Johnson made two free throws with 4.6 seconds remaining for a three-point edge. Dallas looked to Nowitzki, who scored 22 of his 32 points in the second half, to tie the game, but Johnson alertly fouled him when he caught the inbounds pass. Nowitzki hit the first of two free throws and attempted to miss the second, only to bank it in and leave his team a point short. "This is a real disappointing loss," Mavericks acting coach Avery Johnson said. "Anthony Johnson had probably his best game of the year. We got down (9-0) to start the game and gave up 32 points in the first quarter. That really set the tone. "I thought us Johnsons were supposed to stick together. I guess he came from the wrong side of the family." Jermaine O'Neal scored 23 points and grabbed nine rebounds for Indiana, which also was without swingman Stephen Jackson, who was serving a one-game suspension for verbal abuse of an official in Wednesday's loss to Toronto. The Pacers were 0-5 since Jackson returned from his 30-game suspension January 26 but managed to snap their slide without him. "Well, right now we have a little Band-Aid on this, but we want to get the the wound fully healed," Pacers guard Reggie Miller said. "Hopefully, the wins can come in bunches, like the losses have lately." Indiana improved to 5-8 in games decided by three points or less and 3-2 in one-point games. The club has had another four games go to overtime. As long as Tinsley remains sidelined, Johnson will be relied on. "I hope this is a turnaround game for me, personally," Johnson said. "For the team, until you string a couple of wins together, you're not sure if you've turned the corner or not. We're still under .500 (21-24). We're still out of a playoff spot. It's going to be a dogfight the rest of the way." Jerry Stackhouse came off the bench to score 21 points for the Mavericks, who never led in the second half. "We missed too many free throws tonight. That was the game," Stackhouse said. "Anthony Johnson and Fred Jones are guys with playoff experience and they helped their team tonight. They did what they had to do to protect their home court." Dallas was 11-of-18 (61 percent) from the line in the second half.
