Game Story

PORTLAND, Oregon (Ticker) -- Rookie Sebastian Telfair's fourth-quarter performance showed why many believed he was the most talented point guard in last year's draft. Telfair scored 14 of his season-high 23 points in the final period and Damon Stoudamire also added 23 to lead the Portland Trail Blazers to a 101-89 victory in their first meeting with the expansion Charlotte Bobcats. Playing for the struggling Nick Van Exel, Telfair was 6-of-7 from the line in the fourth quarter, including three free throws with 2:25 left to give Portland a 90-79 lead. "Main thing, we went out and got a win," Telfair said. "We're trying to gather some wins, having an advantage being at home for some games. It feels good to come off the bench and help the team get the win." "Telfair was great, of course," Portland coach Maurice Cheeks said. "He's fearless out there and just goes out and plays, sometimes oblivious to a fourth-quarter situation." The Trail Blazers led almost the entire way and built their largest lead at 75-59 with 9 1/2 minutes left on a pair of free throws by Telfair, who was the 13th pick in the 2004 draft. But the Bobcats rallied with an 18-6 run capped by a 3-pointer by former Blazer Steve Smith to close to 81-77 with 4:09 to go. "It was a hard-fought game and we thought we had it under control," Cheeks said. "You think you've got it under control, but they never quit." Stoudamire sealed the victory with six free throws in the final 48 seconds as Portland won consecutive games for the first time since mid-December. Stoudamire has converted 37 straight foul shots and is shooting a league-best 94 percent from the line. "That's why they throw me the ball at the end of the game," Stoudamire said. "I practice them a lot. I expect to go up there and knock them down every time." "We always try and get the ball in his hands at that point of the game," Cheeks said. "It's a luxury to have him there when you know he's going to make those in crunch time." The 19-year-old Telfair angered the Bobcats when he drilled a long 3-pointer as time expired. "I looked at the ref and he told me I had to shoot the ball because the shot clock was still on," Telfair said. "He told me I had to shoot it, so I said, 'All right' and I shot it. He said he would make sure no one would say anything about it and that it was his fault." "Apparently, the ref told him that he had to take the shot," Cheeks said. "Just a rookie mistake and he doesn't understand that yet." Charlotte coach Bernie Bickerstaff thought so little of the play, he refused to comment. "It doesn't even merit conversation," Bickerstaff said. Primoz Brezec collected 17 points and a career-high 17 rebounds and Melvin Ely added a career-high 16 and 11 for the Bobcats, who were trying to win consecutive road games for the first time. "It's good to have 17 boards, but some were on my own put-backs," Brezec said. "A few times, I could have saved myself a couple shots if I would have made my put-backs. I should have faked Theo (Ratliff) a couple times and gave myself some easier shots." Playing without injured star rookie Emeka Okafor, the Bobcats lost for the 10th time in their last 11 road games.
