Game StoryEAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- The Detroit Pistons boast the second-best defense in the NBA, but they could not stop the combination of Vince Carter and Jason Kidd. Carter scored a season-high 41 points and Kidd handed out a season-best 14 assists as the New Jersey Nets snapped the Pistons' five-game winning streak with a 107-85 victory. Carter, who fell one point shy of Richard Jefferson's season-high for the Nets, outscored the Pistons by himself in the third quarter with 15 points. He also grabbed a season-high 11 rebounds. "Defensively, I think we stepped it up and obviously we limited their second-chance points and transition points," Carter said. "This was the bar to see where we are and what we have to work on. We're getting wins. It's fun to play and it's fun to watch." With his fifth assist, Kidd moved past Bob Cousy into 12th place on the NBA's all-time list. Kidd's final assist enabled him to surpass Kenny Anderson as the Nets' all-time leader with 2,364. "You're talking about one of the top 50 (greatest players) who transcended the position for a big point guard," Kidd said of Cousy, the former Boston Celtics great. To (get the Nets record) in 3 1/2 years in New Jersey and pass Bob Cousy, that's very special." The Pistons were held without a field goal for the final 10 minutes of the third period and the first 52 seconds of the fourth. They managed just 11 points in the third quarter, the final seven from the foul line. With 4:17 left in the third and New Jersey clinging to a 63-61 lead, Carter erupted for the Nets' next eight points. New Jersey finished the quarter with a 16-2 spurt to take a 79-63 lead into the final period. "We put Vince on Ben (Wallace) and he did a great job," New Jersey coach Lawrence Frank said. "We were able to separate ourselves defensively in the second half." Carter tacked on nine points and Kidd dished out three assists as the Nets built the lead as high as 24 points in the final quarter. "Vince had a Vince-type day," Kidd said. "When he gets going like that, you don't want to get in his way, but you also don't want to stand around watching. As a teammate, you have the best seat. I was disappointed. I told coach I wanted him to get 50." Tayshaun Prince scored 17 points to lead the Pistons, who fell for just the sixth time in their last 23 regular-season games with the Nets. Despite New Jersey's frontcourt foul trouble, Detroit was unable to take advantage. Antonio McDyess scored 15 points off the bench and Wallace registered 13 points but just seven rebounds five below his average. "I looked at the clock in the third quarter and saw we were down by two and I thought they completely outplayed us," Detroit coach Larry Brown said. "After that, when they went small, we spent all our time trying to exploit the mismatch and we stopped playing and they kept playing. They took advantage of everything." The Pistons allowed New Jersey to shoot 54.4 percent (43-of-79) from the field, which matched a season high for the Nets. "With our defense, we just want to get back into the swing of things," Wallace said.
