Game Story

PHOENIX (Ticker) -- The last thing the reeling New York Knicks needed was to motivate the Phoenix Suns. With the crowd at America West Arena riled by the return of Stephon Marbury, the Suns used a late fourth-quarter run to post a 114-106 triumph over the sliding Knicks. Marbury, who was traded from the Suns to the Knicks on January 5, 2004, raised the ire of Phoenix fans by proclaiming himself the best point guard in the league in January. The Suns' fans vocally let him have it every time he touched the ball and the verbose point guard did nothing to help matters with a hard foul on the immensely popular Steve Nash late in the contest. "Knowing Steph I didn't think it was intentional (the foul on Nash) but when you head tackle someone, it should be flagrant," Suns coach Mike D'Antoni said. "It is too bad the crowd booed Steph because I like him, he's great." "I don't have any feeling toward it," Marbury said of the booing. "I guess it is natural to react that way." To Nash's credit, he refused to engage in Marbury's war of words and instead paid homage to the Knicks' point guard. "Marbury might be (the best)," Nash said. "He is a terrific player but there is no added incentive playing against him." Nash then tried to lessen the tension. "I don't know what to say about the foul. I don't know if it was flagrant but it was OK, we staged it," Nash joked. Even with Marbury being booed, the Knicks, losers of 16 of their last 18 games, were able to hang around. New York was within 93-90 following a 3-pointer by Penny Hardaway with 5:26 remaining, but Nash sparked an 11-2 burst with a 14-footer as the Suns pulled away. Shawn Marion scored nine points in the fourth quarter, including five in the pivotal run. Amare Stoudemire scored 32 points and had 15 rebounds and Marion added 23 and 10 - his 30th double-double of the season. Nash finished with 26 points and 14 assists as Phoenix (38-11) swept its two-game season series from New York for the first time since 1994-95. "We have a lot of answers: Nash, Amare, and Marion had a great run in the second half," D'Antoni added. "We can't complain about winning. We did score a lot of points and we did win." "In the fourth we came out and outran them, outscored them and outrebounded them and that is what we need to do to close out games," Stoudemire said. Nash had as many assists as the entire Knicks' team and has 26 double-doubles this season. Marbury scored 33 points on 13-of-21 shooting and Kurt Thomas added a career-high 21 rebounds. Phoenix has won seven of eight overall and is 7-2 since Nash returned to the lineup on January 21. The Suns are 12-0 at home against the Eastern Conference this season. New York actually led, 81-79, entering the final quarter but Phoenix opened the period with an 11-0 run that included four points apiece by Stoudemire and Marion. The Knicks missed nine shots during the spurt, which ended when Marbury had a basket with 7:03 remaining. Marbury's basket sparked a 9-3 run but the Suns iced the contest by scoring 11 of the next 13 points. Marion capped the spurt with a free throw with 2:46 left to push Phoenix's lead to 104-92.
