Game Story

SEATTLE (Ticker) -- Ray Allen returned to the lineup and got the Seattle SuperSonics back on track at home. After missing the last two games with flu-like symptoms, Allen scored 14 of his 25 points in the first quarter as the SuperSonics opened a big lead and cruised to a 113-99 victory over the Charlotte Bobcats. "I was as sick as I've ever been in my life," Allen said of his six days in bed that included two trips to the hospital. "Tonight, I didn't think anything else except coming out here, playing basketball and doing what I'm capable of doing." Allen, who leads Seattle at 24 points per game, made 9-of-14 shots and recorded five assists in 31 minutes. "I didn't want to do anything complicated out there," Allen said. "I just wanted to fit in. The team played well." With Allen back, the Sonics were able to win for just the second time in their last five home contests. Despite the recent home slump, Seattle still owns the fourth-best home record in the Western Conference at 17-6. The Sonics never trailed as Rashard Lewis and Allen opened the game with consecutive 3-pointers to help build a 10-3 lead 4:30 into the contest. Ninety seconds later, Allen scored six points in a 10-2 spurt that pushed the edge to 22-11 with 3:35 left in the quarter. "He said after the the first couple of minutes that he had to get his second wind," Seattle assistant coach Dwane Casey said. "After that second wind he was OK. I hope the doctors and trainers watch him tomorrow just to see how he responds because he did play a lot of minutes." Lewis, who scored 10 of his 18 points in the first quarter, was pleased to have Allen back. "It's very important to have Ray Allen out on the floor," Lewis said. "He's one of our leaders. (With) the way he shoots the ball, it makes it easier for me. I have another shooter that I can count on in Ray." Vladimir Radmanovic scored 12 of his 23 points in the second quarter as the Sonics all but sealed the victory. He hit a 3-pointer with just over six minutes left that ignited a 15-5 run, which was capped by Luke Ridnour's short jumper that made it 61-37 with 2:15 to go. Radmanovic made 5-of-9 shots from the arc as Seattle - the third best 3-point shooting team in the NBA - made 54 percent (14-of-26) of its attempts. "We told our guys at the half that if we took the threes away, then we were only down nine," Charlotte coach Bernie Bickerstaff said. "We acquiesced to the strongest part of their game - threes." Melvin Ely set a career high for the second consecutive game with 22 points for Charlotte, which got no closer than 13 thereafter. Ely is taking advantage of the extra playing time with rookie Emeka Okafor, the Bobcats' leading scoring and rebounder, on the injured list. "My goal wasn't to try and get a career high," Ely said. "It was to just try and get this team a win. Everything goes right back to normal as soon as Emeka comes back. I'm just going to take advantage of this opportunity while I have it." Reggie Evans grabbed a career-high 21 rebounds for Seattle. He became the first Sonic to grab at least 20 boards since Shawn Kemp tracked down 22 rebounds December 12, 1995 at Dallas. "It felt real good to get (21 rebounds)," Evans said. "Now I have to try harder and do my best to achieve at least 22 next time."
