Game Story

SALT LAKE CITY (Ticker) The New York Knicks did all they could to throw away a rare victory. Stephon Marbury made sure that did not happen. Marbury scored 30 points - including two clutch jumpers in the final minute of overtime - as the Knicks held off a furious rally by the Utah Jazz for a 102-99 victory. Looking for just their third win of the new year, the Knicks led 88-75 with just under six minutes to play in the fourth quarter but gave the lead away, scoring just three points the rest of the period. "This is a big win for us. We've been on a tough stretch the last month and a half," Knicks forward Kurt Thomas said. "We knew, no matter what, we needed to get this win tonight, get one on the road and have something to build on." The Jazz ended the fourth quarter on a 16-3 run, including a 10-1 advantage over the final three minutes, to force overtime. At one point in the Knicks' fourth-quarter drought, they turned it over three possessions in a row, and over the final 4:47 of the period, made just 1-of-8 from the floor. "We felt that if we would have just knocked our free throws down, we would have had complete control of the game. But the fact that we kept missing hurt us," Thomas said. "But we have to give the Jazz credit. They never put their heads down and kept competing." In the extra session, however, Marbury found his shot, scoring eight points - including New York's final six - to help the Knicks avoid going winless on a six-game road trip. Down, 99-98, with 50 seconds remaining, Marbury buried a 22-footer at the top of the key to give the Knicks the lead. Following an Andrei Kirilenko miss, Marbury hit another long jumper with nine seconds remaining to put New York up three. "We stepped up when we had to. Steph made big play after big play," Knicks interim coach Herb Williams said. "The one positive we had was that Steph wanted the ball and he made big shots for us. He put us on his back in overtime. I can't say enough about him and about his effort." "Kurt was setting great screens for me, and I took what the defense gave me," Marbury said. "If it's gonna be a drive, I'll drive. If they let me shoot a jump shot, I'll shoot a jump shot, if I need to pass, I'll pass." Kirilenko, who led the Jazz with 25 points and nine rebounds, missed a potential game-tying 3-pointer as the game's final seconds wound down. "I am pretty happy for the guys, they just fought back and didn't drop their heads," Kirilenko said. "Still, I had a pretty bad game at the end." "That was one of those ballgames I thought we were gonna win," Jazz coach Jerry Sloan said. "We got out of it and lost our concentration for a little bit, and then we fought back and got back into the ballgame to give ourselves a chance to get to overtime, and then we made some mistakes, and those kinds of things have been hurting us coming down the stretch." Gordan Giricek, who played just eight minutes the entire game, forced overtime by knocking down a pair of free throws with two-tenths of a second left in the fourth quarter. He was fouled by rookie Trevor Ariza on a jump shot from the left wing. However, the Jazz only had the opportunity to tie the game because Tim Thomas and Nazr Mohammed both missed a pair of free throws in the final 1:04. "We just didn't hit our shots. That's all," Marbury said. "[But] we were very resilient. We never fell down. We continued to play hard, even when Giricek went to the foul line, no one put their heads down at all. We still believed that we were going to win the game." Penny Hardaway scored 13 points - including eight in the second quarter - and knocked down a pivotal go-ahead jumper with less than two minutes remaining in overtime. "The one thing you know about Penny is that he can make shots, he's going to make plays for you," Williams said. "He's still really productive for us. He caused a lot of matchup problems for the Jazz, we kept running him in the post, he was posting guys up and making plays, and that's what we need him to do." Kurt Thomas scored 16 points and Michael Sweetney added 15 off the bench for New York, which won its first road game since a 119-111 victory over Orlando on December 27. "It does a lot for your confidence," Williams said. "We came here and played well tonight, and ended up coming out with a win. When you play well and you lose, and it sort of deflates you a little bit. But when you come up on the winning end, it's a positive." "It was really important to win. We've been playing hard, that's a given," Marbury said. "We were just playing on pure will tonight. This flight is too long to lose a game like this and then have to get on a plane for four hours, that's too much to think about." Raja Bell scored 16 off the bench for the Jazz and rookie Kirk Snyder had 13, including nine in the first quarter. Carlos Boozer got into early foul trouble and scored five points in just 21 minutes before fouling out in the final period.
