Game Story

ORLANDO, Florida (Ticker) -- The leadership of Orlando Magic guard Steve Francis and the inside play of rookie teammate Dwight Howard were just too much for the Atlanta Hawks to deal with. Francis scored 11 of his 28 points in the fourth quarter and Howard added 15 and tied a season high with 20 rebounds as the Magic held on for a 101-96 victory over the Hawks. Francis' 3-pointer just over four minutes into the third quarter extended Orlando's lead to 70-50. But the high-scoring Francis was forced the bench after picking up his fourth foul on the ensuing possession and the Hawks took advantage, outscoring the Magic 22-8 over the final seven minutes of the period. "We came out so flat in the third quarter," Hawks coach Mike Woodson said. "We got down 20 and then it was a dogfight to get back in it. They kept fighting and you have to give the players credit for that." Atlanta rookie Josh Childress, who posted his second straight double-double with a career-high 19 points and 10 rebounds, scored eight points in the stretch and Tony Delk added six as the Hawks trailed just 78-72 entering the fourth. "That's the part I hate on our team," Orlando forward Hedo Turkoglu said. "(We) just had the lead and sometimes (we) just go easy and let people come back." But Turkoglu opened the scoring in the fourth quarter with a layup and Francis scored the next eight points for the Magic, sinking a pair of free throws at the eight-minute mark to cap a 10-1 run. Delk scored 12 of his 25 points in the fourth quarter and he and Antoine Walker made consecutive shots from the arc to get the Hawks within 97-94 with 38 seconds remaining. "We played hard," said Walker, who scored 25 points. "We dug ourselves a tremendous hole. That is what really hurt." Francis answered with a jumper that hit the front rim and the backboard before dropping through with 17 seconds remaining, all but sealing the victory and halting the Magic's three-game losing streak. "I was missing so many easy shots but when it counted I thought I was able to get a good look and it went down," Francis said. "It feels good to win and hopefully we can keep going into the break." Snubbed in the voting for the All-Star Game, Francis was just 8-of-23 from the floor, but hit 11-of-14 free throws. Howard had 11 offensive rebounds as the Magic held a 57-42 edge on the boards. "I thought Dwight was very good, particularly on the offensive boards," Magic coach Johnny Davis said. "He kept a lot of balls alive for us." "He (Howard) was a monster on the glass," Childress added. "He has great timing and he is strong and can jump high enough to take the ball off the glass when he wants to. That's a good quality to have." Howard posted six points and eight rebounds and Francis scored Orlando's final eight points in the opening quarter, draining a 20-foot jumper at the buzzer to give the Magic a 31-15 lead entering the second. Walker's layup sliced Atlanta's deficit to 41-35 just 5:11 before halftime. "When you're up like that for a long period of time, its hard to consistently stay focused," said Francis, who collected nine assists and seven rebounds. "I'm definitely happy with the result." Turkoglu responded with 10 straight points over the next two minutes, capping the spurt with a three-point play with 3:15 to go. In the second quarter, Turkoglu scored 20 points on 8-of-10 shooting, including 2-of-3 from the arc. to give the Hawks a 56-44 lead at the break. Turkoglu finished with 24 points. "He carried us in the first half, when other guys, including myself, weren't making shots," Francis said. "That's basically what he does he comes in and puts the ball up."
