Game Story

NEW ORLEANS (Ticker) -- P.J. Brown felt the New Orleans Hornets waited long enough to reach double digits in wins. Brown scored 16 points as part of a balanced attack as the Hornets finally recorded their 10th win of the season, a 111-108 victory over the Golden State Warriors. Coming off a win at Portland, New Orleans (10-40) won back-to-back games for the second time this season as it split the four-game season series with Golden State (14-36), which lost for the 18th time in 21 outings. Brown had three consecutive baskets and scored eight points during a 14-2 run that gave New Orleans a 104-97 edge with 4:03 remaining. "The offense kind of opened up for me in the fourth quarter," Brown said. "I saw some opportunites. I got into a good rhythm and the ball was going in for me." Six Hornets recorded double figures, including Bostjan Nachbar, who came off the bench to score 19 points, and rookie J.R. Smith, who scored all 15 points of his points in the second half. "As long as we can get this kind of contribution from a number of guys, we can win some ballgames," Hornets coach Byron Scott said. "I thought Bostjan was terrific tonight offensively, and the rookie (Smith) is really coming. He made some very heady decisions at the end of the game and he is showing that he is starting to grow." Smith made a pair of free throws with four seconds left for the Hornets, who survived Mike Dunleavy missed 3-pointer from the left corner as time expired. "We never should have have gotten down to the end of the game," Warriors coach Mike Montgomery said. "It just never should have come down to that. We had a 10-point lead and we just relaxed. We just relaxed and they made plays." Golden State led by 10 points with 5:25 remaining in the third quarter before the Hornets went on a 10-0 run over the next three minutes to even the score at 74-74. Overall, New Orleans shot 54 percent (40-of-74) from the floor, including 10-of-18 3-pointers. "We weren't really focused in on the things that they like to do offensively," Warriors guard Derek Fisher said. "We never really took anything away from them and they got more and more comfortable as the game went on." Fisher made five 3-pointers and scored 23 points and Dunleavy and Jason Richardson each added 20 for the Warriors, who have not beaten the Hornets on the road since January 1996. Rodney Rogers led the Hornets with 20 points, all in the first three quarters and Dan Dickau added 16 points. Golden State pulled within 107-106 on Fisher's layup with 15 seconds left. After Dickau and Casey Jacobsen each sank foul shots to push the margin to three points for New Orleans, Richardson's layup made it 109-108 with 10 seconds to go. The victory assures the Hornets will not match the NBA record for fewest victories in a season, set by the 1972-73 Philadelphia 76ers.
