Game Story

HOUSTON (Ticker) -- The early frontcourt play of the Houston Rockets was barely enough to hold off the late perimeter shooting of the Portland Trail Blazers. Yao Ming scored 23 points, Tracy McGrady added 18 and Juwan Howard 17 as the Rockets extended their winning streak to seven games with an 81-80 triumph over the Trail Blazers. Yao and McGrady combined for 21 points in the first half and helped limit Portland to just 29 percent shooting (9-of-31) as Houston jumped out to a 44-28 lead at the half. Trail Blazers forward Darius Miles felt their struggles in the first half caused Portland's seventh straight road loss. "It hurts a lot," said Miles. "We just couldn't score in the first half and we have to execute better, make some shots and score some easy baskets. We just weren't moving the ball around in the first half and that was the difference." The lead swelled to 52-34 on Yao's layup at the 7:03 mark of the third quarter before Damon Stoudamire, who scored 17 of his 25 points in the second half, led a rally by the Trail Blazers. Stoudamire's 3-pointer with 5:19 left in the third quarter sparked a 17-3 spree over the next three minutes. Joel Przybilla scored four consecutive points during that stretch and Stoudamire buried another 3-pointer with 2:24 left to reduce the deficit to 54-49. McGrady said the Rockets got complacent and should not have been in a position to blow an 18-point lead. "We kind of let our guard down a little bit," McGrady said. "We stopped doing the things that we were doing well in the first half that put us up by 18. Portland got back in the game and we were kind of hanging our heads down. "But we got the win and that's all that matters. It feels good to win seven in a row, but I'll take eight before the break." Rockets coach Jeff Van Gundy was not at all pleased with the offense prior to halftime. "We were awful in the first half and have been in the last five to seven days," Van Gundy said. "We've been softening up in our work and our energy and intensity. But tonight, thankfully, we didn't have to pay the ultimate price, which is a loss." Miles' jumper with 7:52 remaining mark pulled the Trail Blazers within 63-59, but Yao answered by scoring six straight points to extend the lead to 69-62. Stoudamire struck again, hitting a 3-pointer before Miles' dunk reduced the deficit to 69-67. Yao hit one free throw, but Derek Anderson drilled a 3-pointer and Stoudamire followed with a layup to give Portland its first lead since the first quarter, 72-70. "I think everyone was surprised that we lost such a big lead," Yao said. "We started to feel tight and we tried to play our game. We got away from our game and it was hard to get back in it. That was the problem we had tonight, but we got the win. If they had about 10 more seconds they could have beat us." McGrady tied it with a jumper with 2:04 to go and Miles was whistled for goaltending on Yao's shot to give Houston the lead for good. David Wesley hit a technical foul shot and Bob Sura added a layup to make it 77-72. Anderson and Howard traded a pair of free throws and Stoudamire drilled his fifth 3-pointer to make it 79-77 with 10 seconds to play. After two more free throws from Howard, Miles raced into the frontcourt and hit another 3-pointer with 3.1 seconds to go. Wesley was fouled with 2.1 seconds left. After missing the first free throw, he intentionally missed the second. Stoudamire collected the rebound and got an excellent look at a winning shot from halfcourt that hit the backboard and front rim before bouncing away. "I don't think we ran out of gas at the end," Portland coach Maurice Cheeks said. "We had a chance to win the game and we dug ourselves out of a big hole and regained the lead. We were competing, but we put ourselves in the position where we had to make miraculous plays to win the game." Bob Sura matched a season high with 12 rebounds and Howard grabbed 11 for the Rockets, who outrebounded the Trail Blazers, 43-39, and converted 12 offensive boards into 17 second-chance points. Przybilla posted 14 points and 11 rebounds and Miles scored 11 points for Portland, which shot 60 percent (21-of-35) in the second half, including 73 percent (8-of-11) from the arc.
