Game Story

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- Kenyon Martin found the crowd at Continental Airlines Arena to be a lot more friendly than his former team. Martin heard a lot of cheers but scored just 13 points after a hot start as the Denver Nuggets stumbled to a 94-79 loss to the New Jersey Nets, who got 23 points from Vince Carter. Martin spent his first four seasons in New Jersey and flourished playing with star guard Jason Kidd as the duo helped the team reach back-to-back NBA Finals in 2002 and 2003. But the top overall pick in the 2000 draft was dealt to Denver in a sign-and-trade in the offseason. "I don't know what I miss here," Martin said. "It was strange playing against Jason Kidd. But I don't have time to think about what ifs and missing things." The return of Martin seemed to energize the crowd of 16,125, which gave him a standing ovation during introductions and chanted his name in the opening and closing minutes. "Were you expecting something different?" Martin asked. "(The media) is acting like I cursed everyone out and pulled my pants down. "I didn't leave on bad terms. I left on good terms. And I didn't leave - they got rid of me. I know people miss me here, it's not a surprise. It feels good. I had a great four years here." Martin made five of his first six shots but struggled thereafter, missing seven of his final eight as the Nuggets fell apart. After going 12-of-15 in the opening nine minutes, Denver shot just 32 percent (16-of-50) thereafter. "We just made it as tough as possible every time he caught the ball and forced him further out from the basket," said Nets center Jason Collins, who guarded Martin. "We waited for him to either drive at us or if he's going to shoot the face-up shot, you have to live with it." "We never got back to that energy and enthusiasm we were playing with in the first quarter," Denver coach George Karl said. "New Jersey did a great job of crowding us, and we didn't have much going offensively." The Nets took control by bridging the halves with a 25-2 run. They took the lead with 14 straight points late in the second quarter and, after Denver's Carmelo Anthony ended the first half with two free throws, opened the third with an 11-0 run. Carter scored seven straight points during the burst and rookie Nenad Krstic added the final five, giving the Nets a 62-43 cushion with a jumper at 8:08 of the third period. Denver missed 11 straight shots and committed eight turnovers during the decisive stretch, going without a basket for 10:50. The Nuggets did not get closer than 16 points thereafter and fell behind by as many as 26. "(In) the second quarter we put a defensive stamp on the game," Nets coach Lawrence Frank said. "And in the third quarter, we really established on both ends how we need to play in order to win." Kidd had 13 points and eight assists despite spending the entire fourth quarter on the bench with Carter as the Nets gave their stars much-needed rest. "Jason Kidd, he's the difference," said Martin, who won in his first meeting against the Nets while Kidd was sidelined following knee surgery. "Without him, they don't go. With him, they go. There is no in-between." Ron Mercer scored 10 of his 12 points in the fourth quarter and Travis Best and Jacque Vaughn added 10 apiece for New Jersey, which shot 52 percent (36-of-69) and won for the 10th time in 13 games. Anthony scored 18 points for Denver, which lost for just the third time in nine games since Karl was hired on January 27.
