Game Story

NEW YORK (Ticker) -- A bounce finally went the New York Knicks' way. Tim Thomas hit a caroming 3-pointer at the buzzer and the Knicks got a rare win, a 102-99 victory over the expansion Charlotte Bobcats. Thomas, who scored just seven points, took a wide open 3-pointer from the corner that hit the front of the rim, bounced high off the backboard and dropped through as time expired. Officials reviewed the play and ruled the basket good. "It just feels good to get a win," Thomas said. "I was just hoping it went in. I didn't see it bounce, so I didn't know until it went through." The Knicks led by nine points entering the fourth quarter but had to scramble to pick up just their fourth win since New Year's Day. The lucky bounce saved them as they led by as many as 14 points but were booed by the sellout crowd after the shorthanded Bobcats pulled within 87-85 with 5:18 to play. "We needed something like that," Knicks coach Herb Williams said. "It's been happening to us all year, where people were hitting last shots against us. But when you have a team down - and we had them down by 14 - you have to execute your offense and get good shots." With the score tied, 99-99, rookie Bernard Robinson blew past Jamal Crawford but missed a layup. The Knicks took over with 12 seconds left and got Thomas' game-winner. Robinson had a strong game as he picked up the slack for rookie Emeka Okafor, who sat out with a sprained left ankle. He poured in 18 points in 25 minutes, both season highs. "It just felt good and the shots were falling. I felt good out there and wanted to take the last shot," Robinson said. "I think I made the most of my minutes. Anytime you get a chance in the NBA, you have to be ready." "He was probably the reason we got back in the game. No one out there could match up with him," Charlotte coach Bernie Bickerstaff said. "He was the one guy that was going north and south as opposed to east and west." Crawford scored 23 points off the bench and Stephon Marbury added 16 for the Knicks. Marbury had scored at least 30 points in five straight games but took just eight shots. "They are a scrappy team. They played Miami tough the other night," Crawford said. "We shouldn't have been in that position, but it feels good to get the win."
