Game Story

SEATTLE (Ticker) -- Jason Terry picked a good time to make his only basket of the second half. Terry hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 8.7 seconds remaining as the Dallas Mavericks rallied from an 11-point fourth-quarter deficit to post a 95-92 victory over the Seattle SuperSonics, who had a five-game winning streak snapped. A Seattle native, Terry missed six of his first seven shots, including his only attempt in the second half, before scoring four points in the final 79 seconds. "The ball ended up in my hands and I knocked it down, but it was a total team effort," said Terry, who was playing before about family and friends numbering 75. "It was big. The whole city was watching." "I didn't think he played all that well, really," Mavericks coach Don Nelson said. "Certainly that big shot gave him the reprieve from the coach." It was the second consecutive game that Terry lifted Dallas to a win in the final seconds. He also converted a three-point play with 12 seconds left in Friday's 115-113 victory in Sacramento. "He has been making big shots for us all season long," Nelson said. "It's the second night in a row that he has made the game-winner and he has to be pretty proud of that." With the Mavericks trailing by a point, Terry took a pass from Josh Howard and drained an open 3-pointer from the right wing to give Dallas a 94-92 lead. The SuperSonics had a two chances to tie the game at the other end. Antonio Daniels had his layup blocked out of bounds by Howard with 3.8 seconds left and All-Star Rashard Lewis missed a jumper after receiving the ensuing inbounds pass. Dallas' Darrell Armstrong made 1-of-2 free throws to provide the final margin. Lewis scored 18 points and hit a 3-pointer with just over five minutes to go that gave Seattle an 89-78 lead. But the Sonics did not make a basket thereafter as the Mavericks closed the game with a 15-2 run. "We gave up some easy baskets," Seattle coach Nate McMillan said. "We made some turnovers and we couldn't knock down a shot when we had a 10-point lead." "We went to our zone defense and we were vulnerable for the 3-point shot," Nelson said. "At least we took them out of their offense and didn't allow them the screen-and-roll. They had to attack our zone, and I think we just got lucky when they missed shots. They had a couple of good looks and they missed them." Michael Finley sparked the comeback with six of his 23 points down the stretch, including a tough turnaround jumper with 1:46 to play that cut the deficit to 92-88. Terry added a free throw and All-Star Dirk Nowitzki converted a layup one minute later to set the stage for Terry's heroics. Nowitzki had 31 points and 11 rebounds and Erick Dampier contributed a season-high 19 and 14 for the Mavericks, who have won three of four. All-Star Ray Allen struggled for the Sonics, scoring just 10 points - 14 below his average - on 4-of-17 shooting. "My shot wasn't falling, but we had control of the game in the fourth quarter and it got away from us," Allen said. "We could have won that game regardless of what was going on with me. I had open shots all night, but I just missed them." Nelson credited Howard for keeping Allen under wraps. "I just tried to contain him," Howard said. "He's an All-Star and I'm just a second-year player. But I just played aggressive, and if you keep a hand in somebody's face, it's going to get on their nerves." Luke Ridnour scored five of his 17 points as the Sonics closed the third period with an 18-7 run to forge a 66-66 tie heading into the final period. "We spent a lot of energy getting back into the game," Daniels said. "But once we got the lead, we didn't do a good job of sealing the deal."
