Game Story

PHILADELPHIA (Ticker) -- Marc Jackson saved the Philadelphia 76ers from a sickening case of deja vu. Jackson's layup with one second left prevented a familiar collapse and allowed the 76ers to escape with their third straight win, a 106-105 victory over the New York Knicks. Allen Iverson had 38 points and 10 assists for the Sixers, who appeared to be headed for a repeat of the fourth-quarter fade they experienced here against the Knicks on December 17, when they blew a 19-point lead and lost in overtime. In that contest and this one, the Sixers appeared to be in total control before the Knicks rallied with a lineup of mostly reserves led by Jerome Williams. "Nobody in this locker room is the type of player that is just going to quit or throw in the towel," said Williams, who scored all of his eight points in the fourth quarter. "We have a lot of fighters on this team. We're going to continue to fight, no matter what." "It was like deja vu," Iverson said. "We said coming out of the fourth quarter that those guys were going to keep playing. They came back on us the last time they played here and came out of here with a win. We tried to make sure it didn't happen." Having squandered an 11-point lead, the Sixers trailed, 105-104, and took over with four seconds left after a missed jumper by Stephon Marbury, who had 32 points and nine assists. The inbounds pass went into the right corner to Iverson, who threw away a pass after being double-teamed on the previous possession. He was double-teamed again but found a cutting Jackson, who dropped in a layup. "I knew that they were going to double somebody, but I didn't know who it was going to be," Jackson said. "I was surprised that they doubled (Iverson) off of me and I just got the open pass. It was a great play and we executed it properly." "I had no idea that they were going to do it," Iverson said. "As soon as I got the ball, I turned around and saw two people. I saw Marc cutting to the basket and it was about making the shot at that point." The Knicks had a chance to win as Penny Hardaway found an open Nazr Mohammed with a lob pass. But Mohammed, nursing a severe groin strain, could not convert, dropping New York to 8-16 in games decided by six points or less. "If I had that shot again, I could have hit it with a hurt groin, a hurt knee or a hurt anything, so I'm not going to blame it on that," Mohammed said. "I rushed the shot a little bit, just because it was right there. It was a shot that I felt that I could just catch and kind of tip it in." Jackson scored 22 points for the Sixers (26-26), who reached .500 for the first time since November 26 and climbed into a first-place tie with Boston in the Atlantic Division. "It means a lot because, we're not giving up and that says a lot about us as a team," said Iverson. "I just like the fact that everyone on the team is supporting each other. The coaches are giving out assignments and guys are trying their hardest to execute them. The fans are coming out every night to support us and are getting into the game." Coming off a career-high 60-point explosion Saturday, Iverson appeared headed for another big game with 31 points in the first half. But he was quiet in the second half and finished 11-of-24 with eight turnovers. "It's tough to score 60 points and come into the next game and not think about it," Iverson said. "Everybody is saying before the game 'What are you going to do tonight? Are you going to score 60 or 70?'" The Knicks trailed, 93-82, with less than eight minutes to play when Williams scored five points and Marbury seven in a 12-0 burst that provided a 94-93 lead with 4:58 to go. That was the first of eight lead changes in the last five minutes. Marbury and Iverson traded 3-pointers before a basket by Corliss Williamson pulled Philadelphia into a 102-102 tie with 2:47 left. A lane jumper by Mike Sweetney gave the Knicks the lead and Williams added a foul shot for a 105-102 edge before Williamson scored inside again with 53 seconds remaining. Iverson and Jackson carried the Sixers to a 60-48 halftime lead. Iverson made 9-of-15 shots and 13-of-15 free throws and Jackson scored 18 points. Philadelphia's Kyle Korver scored all 12 of his points on four 3-pointers in the third quarter.
