Game Story

BOSTON (Ticker) -- Ricky Davis shot the Boston Celtics into first place at the All-Star break. Davis nailed a jumper over Mike Miller with 3.9 seconds remaining, giving the Celtics a 90-88 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies. Miller's 3-pointer with nine seconds left capped a 10-3 surge for the Grizzlies, tying the game at 88-88. But following a timeout, the Celtics isolated the quicker Davis on Miller along the left side. After using a pump-fake, Davis drained his jumper from 12 feet to give the Celtics the lead. "The (play) was pretty much just get it in and get that handoff to Paul (Pierce) and let him got to work, but (Shane) Battier was kind of overplaying him and I couldn't hand it off to him, so I just took it and went to work myself," Davis said. "I saw Miller on me, so that's an obvious mismatch. I just wanted to go at him and make the shot." The Grizzlies were out of timeouts, and Miller missed a desperation 3-pointer as time expired. "We made it hairy, but I'll tell you, we're doing pretty well right now as far as winning games, fourth quarters, when you look at it record-wise around the league," Celtics coach Doc Rivers said. "I'll take the win." Paul Pierce scored 19 points and rookie Tony Allen 15 for the Celtics (27-26), who won for the sixth time in eight games and moved a game ahead of Philadelphia in the Atlantic Division. "It feels good going into the break in first place," Pierce said. "We have the next five days knowing we are the team on top of the Atlantic, playing with a lot of momentum and getting ready for the second-half stretch." Stromile Swift scored 19 points before leaving in the third quarter with a sprained left ankle to lead the Grizzlies, who have lost consecutive games for the first time since December 22-23. "I'm sorry about Stro going down the way he did," lamented Grizzlies coach Mike Fratello, already without forwards Pau Gasol and James Posey. "He was playing a heck of a game. I'm obviously disappointed with the loss, but I couldn't be much prouder of the effort they gave after he went down." Moments after the Grizzlies lost Swift, the Celtics lost their composure. Raef LaFrentz was ejected for picking up two technical fouls for arguing with referee Mark Wunderlich. Pierce also was whistled for a technical and the Grizzlies pulled within 72-66 after three quarters. Brian Cardinal added 17 points and Jason Williams, playing with a sore left leg, contributed 14 and six assists for the Grizzlies. "We had to pick it up when Stro went out, and I think we did, Cardinal said. "We're a team that's walking wounded. We're struggling for bodies. Hopefully we can get Stro back healthy, as well as Posey and Pau, and come back strong after the break."
