Game Story

HOUSTON (Ticker) -- Some late heroics from All-Stars Ray Allen and Rashard Lewis led to the end of two very different streaks. Allen and Lewis combined to score 13 of the Seattle SuperSonics' last 16 points as they rallied from a nine-point deficit in the final four minutes to post an 87-85 victory over the Houston Rockets. Seattle avoided its first three-game losing streak of the season while Houston had its season-high eight-game winning streak halted. "It was a good win, not only for me but for this team," said Lewis, a Houston native. "We had lost two straight." "We may have needed a (break) after the last two games," Seattle coach Nate McMillan said. "We were flat. I saw the aggressiveness come back tonight." Allen gave Seattle its first lead since the second quarter, 85-84, when he slammed home an outlet pass after Lewis swiped the ball from Rockets All-Star Tracy McGrady with 38 seconds to go. "It was definitely a clean strip," Lewis said. "I kind of stuck my hand in there and knocked it off his knee." "You don't stop guys like that," McMillan said. "You make them work. It was good defense. Our big guys did a good job of coming over (to help out)." Houston's Dikembe Mutombo leveled the game with a free throw with 19 seconds left but Allen, who scored 29 points, drew a loose-ball foul from Rockets guard David Wesley going for the rebound on the second attempt. "I don't know who it was, but I got pushed into the bench," said Allen, who hit his left side against a couple of chairs. "I zoned right back in going to the foul line." "If I was on the other end, I wouldn't have wanted that call to decide the game," Houston coach Jeff Van Gundy said. "It's a loose ball. There was contact. Just give it to the other team out of bounds." Allen calmly drilled two free throws with 16 seconds to reclaim the lead for Seattle. "I like to think I've got a great chance," he said. "There's no one better." On Houston's ensuing possession, the SuperSonics double-teamed McGrady and forced him to give up the ball. He found a wide-open Scott Padgett in the left corner, but Padgett's 3-pointer missed everything and Allen grabbed the ball and ran out the clock. "I didn't think those guys were going to double-team me in a situation like that because they were up two," McGrady said. "I made the right play. I saw Scott Padgett in the corner wide open, so I just kicked it to him. He got a good look at it." "I wasn't disappointed in that shot," Van Gundy said. "It didn't go in, but I was fine with the shot." Seattle needed to play sound defense since it shot only 36 percent (31-of-85) for the game. "You can't look at the stats," said Lewis, who shot only 7-for-20 but scored 23 points and added nine rebounds. "That's coming off the All-Star break. I wasn't in rhythm in the first half on the offensive end." The Rockets held an 80-71 cushion with 4:41 left before Lewis scored five straight points and Vladimir Radmanovic connected on a 3-pointer to shave the deficit to one with 3:25 to play. Houston (32-22) had one fewer option after center Yao Ming fouled out with 1:17 to play after scoring 30 points. Yao was called for an offensive foul, hooking Jerome James on a drive on the baseline. "I was so happy," James said of the call. "I thought for sure it was against me. Every time I touched the ball, (Yao) was holding and grabbing. But they wouldn't let me do it on other end of the court. "It was definitely an offensive foul. I said to the referee, 'Thank you.' I ran down the court before he could change his mind. I didn't think they'd call it against Yao, especially since it was his sixth."
