Game Story

SALT LAKE CITY (Ticker) -- A five-day layoff and a recent lack of success at the Delta Center could not stop the Dallas Mavericks. Dirk Nowitzki scored 29 points and Michael Finley added 24 as the Mavericks completed a perfect five-game road trip with a 101-83 victory over the struggling Utah Jazz. With a 119-113 triumph at Phoenix on Thursday, Dallas entered the All-Star break with four straight road wins and seven of the last eight away from home. "We're playing great. We have a sense of confidence on the road," Finley said. "In a way, we kind of look forward to the road to kind of prove critics wrong. When you're on the road, it's just you and those guys on the court against everybody. I think we like that kind of pressure." "We're very confident (on the road)," said guard Jason Terry, who had nine points and four assists. "It's good. For one thing, we know during the playoffs we can go into other teams' arenas and win games." But its first test following the break was at the Delta Center, where it had lost three straight visits. The Mavericks looked to change the trend early, opening with an 11-2 run and building the lead to 19-4 with 5:03 to go in the first quarter. But the Jazz - who had dropped 20 of their previous 26 games - bounced back in the second period, using a 15-7 spurt to climb within 37-35 with 5:22 remaining and taking their first lead, 46-45, on a pair of free throws by Matt Harpring just over three minutes later. Raja Bell sank two foul shots with 54 seconds to go, giving Utah a 50-49 edge before a basket by Nowitzki put Dallas ahead at the break. "I thought in the first half, they really (stayed) in the game, they got to the foul line and they really attacked the offensive glass," Nowitzki said. "In the second half, we took those things away." Bell scored 10 of Utah's first 12 points in the third quarter, but the Jazz found themselves trailing, 64-58, with 6:28 to go. A 7-0 run lifted Utah to a 65-64 lead, but Dallas ended the period with seven straight points and Nowitzki opened the fourth quarter with a layup for a 77-69 bulge. "Teams must be toying with us because we've been able to hang in there with them, and then we can't seem to finish," Utah coach Jerry Sloan said. An 11-2 burst later in the period made it 88-75 with 7:05 remaining, and the Mavericks coasted down the stretch, outscoring the Jazz, 26-14, in the quarter en route to their eighth win in the last nine road games. "The way we played before the All-Star Game, with those four games, was huge," Nowitzki said. "We really executed down the stretch in the fourth quarter, just like we did today. That's what it's all about. Down the stretch, we've got to get the big shots, we've got to make big plays, and in the last few games, we've been doing that." Josh Howard had 18 points and nine rebounds for Dallas, which held Utah under 100 points for the 10th time in the last 12 meetings between the teams. "I think we buckled down on the defensive end," Finley said. "The coaches were emphasizing that our offense was not the problem tonight. It was defensively, stopping them and making them take tough shots and, most importantly, getting rebounds." "They did a great job defending us," Sloan said. "They made it difficult for us to read what was going on at times and we just kind of hung out." Bell had 16 points and eight boards while Andrei Kirilenko and Howard Eisley each scored 12 points for the Jazz.
