Game StoryDALLAS (Ticker) -- Dirk Nowitzki would not allow the Dallas Mavericks to experience their first defeat against the New Orleans Hornets this decade. Nowitzki scored 13 of his 28 points in the fourth quarter, including a pair of clinching free throws with 4.1 seconds left, and grabbed 11 rebounds as the Mavericks posted their 12th straight victory over the Hornets, 90-86. The Mavericks have not lost to the Hornets since a 104-99 setback in Charlotte on November 17, 1999. Dallas has not dropped a home game to the Hornets since a 94-92 defeat on January 24, 1998 - five months before it acquired Nowitzki from Milwaukee in a draft-day deal. "We weren't at out best tonight, but we got the win," Dallas coach Don Nelson said. "They made me work extra hard to get it. It sure would be nice to have an easy game at home against a team that hasn't won much. It just wasn't meant to be tonight." The Hornets, who are a Western Conference-worst 11-45, have lost four straight games. "They came out ready to play," said Mavericks forward Josh Howard of the Hornets. "We won, but we didn't come out ready to play like I think we should. I think we could have come out with more energy. They can come out any given night and beat anybody. It was a difficult game to get ready for and they almost beat us, but we pulled it out at the end." "I've been encouraged by our effort," Hornets coach Byron Scott said. "Guys have given it everything they have. We're still making a lot of mistakes that we can't afford to make, and a lot of that is due to the youth on our team. They're getting better, and every day we're just working on our game to improve." Michael Finley's jumper with 21 seconds remaining gave the Mavericks an 88-83 lead, but rookie Josh Smith countered with a pair of free throws with 10.1 seconds left. Finley was fouled with 8.2 to play but missed two free throws, giving the Hornets a chance to tie. But the Mavericks fouled Smith before he could get a shot off with 5.1 seconds left, and he made only 1-of-2 attempts to pull the Hornets within 88-86. Nowitzki was fouled a second later and calmly sank both attempts to ice the game. "It's too bad that on a sore knee Dirk has to get 28 points and 11 rebounds for us to win," Nelson said. "That's sad as far as I'm concerned. I don't think that I had a lot of guys play very well tonight. Some of them played terrible." Reserve Lee Nailon scored 14 points and P.J. Brown added 12 and 14 rebounds for the Hornets, who slipped to 3-27 on the road this season. Dallas made 26-of-34 free throws while New Orleans sank only 14-of-23. "It's been two games in a row where our opponents have way more free throws than us," Nailon said. "We've got to make a concerted effort to play defense, move our feet and help each other. That way, we can prevent easy baskets or plays that lead to free throws."
